Hey guys so I have currently an i5 4570 and a GTX 770, the 770 is definitely showing its age at this point so i have been thinking of upgrading to a 1070.

However I am wondering if the 1070 would be a waste of money for 1080p @60hz ultra settings with my current setup or should I just get a 1060?

I could also get the 1070 and upgrade to a 4790 in the upcoming months however I have seen this i7 still also causes some bottlenecking.

What do you guys think I should do?

Edit: In the end what I am most worried about is a huge loss in performance because of bottlenecking therefore money wasted.

Cheers!

I would go with the 1070 if you playing on get upgrading your to display to 1440p. However some newer AAA titles are getting to be really demanding even at 1080p on Ultra settings.

You will see some slight bottlenecking but it will be still worth getting the 1060(6GB) at least. But if you find a 1070 on sale, then get it.

I'm going to say it's because you're new...takes a while for the members to prepare the required hazing.

I can tell you there wont a be a "huge" loss in performance due to bottle-necking, though I think a 1070 may not be fully utilized with a 4570. A 4790 (even non K) is probably still good for 90% of gaming and should work OK with a 1070. However, I wonder if it's worth the cost of the upgrade. How much would a 4790+1070 cost? It is possible to get a new PC with newer CPU, DDR4, and GTX 1060 class GPU for $650, leaving your old system for other uses or possible sale.

A 6GB GTX1060 alone might be your best value for an upgrade, and can handle most games with high settings at 1920x1080. Then save up for a full system replacement in a couple years.

I have an I5 4690K and a 1060 3gb card because I don't game that much any more and the games I play can be maxed out and not slow down my fun @ 1080P.

I would say that if you plan on an I7 upgrade, then a 1080 would be a better choice for future proofing. I am sure you can find something used at a good price.

I will agree that the 1060(6GB) could be the best option for the OP, but a 1070 will be more future proof if he is planing on building a new rig in the next two to three years.
That way he can build new rig in stages instead of all at once.

An i5 4570 @ 3.2 will not bottleneck a gtx1070 at all at 1080p @ ultra settings in 90% of AAA games.
A 4970 will not bottleneck a gtx1070 in any AAA game @ 1080p.

A gtx770 is the bottleneck for a i5 4570.
A gtx 1060 will be less of a bottleneck than a gtx770 but still will be the bottleneck using ultra settings @ 1080p with a i5 4570.
A gtx1060 will be a major bottleneck for a 4970 cpu.

If you want 60fps at ultra/high settings, its best to buy a gtx1070, not a 1060 especially if you plan to upgrade to a 4970.
A 4970 can still push the latest high end gpu's.
A 4970k is only~ 12% slower than a 7700k while gaming.

I own an i5 and gtx1070 and did some testing.

I would just say you need faster cpu if you want to push high fps for 144hz panels.

I face heavy cpu bottleneck by using i5 4440 3.1Ghz with gtx 1070 on certain games, mostly it is over 60fps when my panel can do 165hz.

If you are using something like 1440p but 60hz, cpu are less of the concern, just get gtx1070 and enjoy.

Just to tell you that i’m running 6600k at 4.6ghz afterwards and still face cpu bottlenecks in some games LOL. Can you believe i was cpu bottlenecked in dota 2?

When do you plan to upgrade to a modern CPU and motherboard? (Just upgrading to a 4790 seems a waste.)

Would you be buying a new GPU then too?

I'm using a GTX 980ti with an ancient i5-2500 non-K and even if it is bottlenecked it was still a nice upgrade from the GTX 680 I had before. I'll keep using the 980ti with the i7-8700 Coffee Lake system I'll be building soon, then finally replace it with a GTX 2080ti near the end of next year.

I'll have gotten 3 years of use out of the 980ti so it doesn't feel like a waste for it to have been bottlenecked for the first 2 years.

No, of course not I would not be getting a new GPU if I get the 1070 now.

I was thinking about using DSR with it tho, for a while untill games catch up.

I'm only aiming for 1080p 60hz Ultra settings.

The 1070 should be all you will need for a long while unless you are planning on going to 4K. Even then quite a few games will still be playable at that resolution.

See above.... he is using a 1080p 60hz monitor.

4790 is a waste? it will easily push a gtx1080.
I believe its the third fastest gaming cpu?
8700K overclocked
7700k/6700k overclocked [tie]
4790 overclocked/ Ryzen 1600 overclocked (tie)

Yes, it's still good, but how cheap can you get a used one?

I'm just thinking spending $150+ on an older 4-core to use with an old motherboard that's out of warranty, with old RAM is a waste compared to using the existing i5 for a while longer and putting that money towards a 6 or (next year) possibly 8-core CPU with a shiny new motherboard and faster RAM.

Just keep in mind that 6500@4.5 >>>>> I5 4570 locked at stock speed (3.4 ghz max all core boost).

@ OP: Tbh, i think a GTX 1060 6GB is the max i wold go for an i5 4570...
Only go for 1070 if you plan to upgrade your CPU soon.

Btw i got I5-4570 too with RX 580 8GB Nitro+ and playing at 2560x1080 High/Ultra i think the CPU is a slight bottleneck in some DX11 games (i.e: GTA V), but maybe that's part cuz of worse cpu overhead from AMD drivers idk..
I just can't see the point to put 30~50% more GPU power in this rig when i'm already maxing this cpu on most newers AAA games..

What do you mean?

My motherboard supports the i7 4790, I would just need to swap it out.

I mean your motherboard is 3? years old, and could die tomorrow. Spending $250 on a CPU upgrade for it that you don't really need seems like a waste when you could put that money towards getting a Coffee Lake 6- or 8-core next year.

I can agree with this. The OP should just get the 1070 for now and save up for a new computer and display in year or two.

Yeah, probably in a year I could get the new ryzen 2 or whatever intel has if it's worth it.

Edit: I could get the i7 4790 or 4770 for around 140 bucks used If I'm not mistaken.

Get the 1070 now, see how happy you are using it with your current CPU.

After that, if you are convinced your CPU is holding you back then maybe consider a CPU-only upgrade.

That would be best, although I rather doubt that the OP's CPU will be holding him back that much. In any case I would just save money for a new computer in the future.
