Insurance implys that you pay for the benefits incase such a disaster were to occur 😉

And no - being a citizen does not imply you pay into the insurance :colbert:

Fact unemployment is insurance, contributed by the employer for employees.

Fact I do pay disability insurance each check.

they are not handouts they are insurance programs

OP would rather die than take a check from his insurance company if his car gets wrecked.

Lol @ some people claiming public schooling and road upkeep are handouts, you guys are the ones who don't get it.

Those programs are supposed to be for people who NEED help to get back on their feet again. There shouldn't be any shame in accepting help when you need it.

However, far far too many people are using those programs when they DON'T need to. They're doing it because they can, and those people should be more than ashamed. They should be treated like the thieves that they are.

Agreed, all these programs are created with proper intentions in mind, and if so many weren't cradle to the grave dependent on them, or didn't have a horribly unaccountable entity running them (government) this would barely be an issue. But as the programs are run today, and are only getting progressively worse I have no problem making general statements against them.

You pay about 25-35% tax on EVERYTHING you've ever earned in your life and will be.

All that money goes to one singular entity (government) where corruption runs rampant. They spend it on however they please on whims.

You bet your ass I'll gladly take my unemployment.

how many people are cradle to the grave dependent on .gov programs?

It is far more logical, useful and cost-effective to both the individual and society as a whole to catch a person as they're stumbling and get them on solid footing again than it is to let them be completely destroyed and hope they can put it all together again from nothing.

Personal vanity notwithstanding, there is no shame in being smart about failure as it's bound to happen to some of us.

Good point.

I hope OP is never in the position to need to test his theory.

Did using my GI Bill for college after 4 years Army infantry count as a "handout"?

Are my kids loafing free-riders because they attend public school?

How about my parents getting their social security checks?

Same (well not die but I couldn't do it) We had this discussion at work recently actually. I was shocked that one of my coworkers who earns around 110k a year said he wishes he could figure out how to get food stamps. The mentality nowadays seems to be that if person X gets freebies, I want them too.

this is normally found with folks who see their success a burden vs blessing, its perspective.

How many people do you see taking advantage of these programs in a prideful way?

Round number would be fine.

Those programs were created to generate votes. The generosity behind them is, for the most part, fraudulent.

However, the fact remains that they do a great deal of good for those in need.

Until and unless abusing those programs becomes socially unacceptable, nothing is going to change. If you can figure out how to make that happen, you might save us from the cliff we're heading for.

I'm on disability. Never on unemployment or food stamps or any of the other programs that go with TANF and so on. I have gotten charity food assistance and, I get some of my medication from manufacturers free programs.

I'm not ashamed to be on disability. It isn't much money. The emotion I feel is bewilderment Disability is complicated. It's a full-time job to get through the mess. My daughter and younger son nearly lost their jobs getting it done.

If it's any consolation, I'm likely to die soon.

To the OP, I grew up in a mennonite community, where there are a lot of things that you are supposed to feel ashamed about (like wearing the wrong color bonnet). You might consider joining that. You would be right at home there - as long as you don't mind hard physical labor from dawn to midnight. They do not believe in taking government handouts.

If it's any consolation, I'm likely to die soon.

Disability is insurance you are entitled to and have one some level paid for.
Don't let people like the OP make you feel bad in any way for takign advantage of your insurance.

Unemployment, disability, food stamps, obamaphone, tuition reimbursement to name a few I would never accept. Some are worse than others. My tax return for example is my money to begin with, so I will take every penny of that I can get back.

::Facepalm

I've put many thousands of dollars more into unemployment than I'll ever get back out of it, so I'll be damned sure to milk it for every penny if I'm ever in that situation.

edit: The only thing I really have a problem with are people who commit fraud on these programs. I think the requirements for getting welfare should be made more strict and there should be more conditions to remain on it.

Than take a government handout.

When did it go from people being ashamed to be given other people's wealth to people expecting and demanding it each month as their right ?
You take government handouts all the time. It may not be as obvious as an unemployment or welfare check, but everyone in our country has something subsidized by the federal government (whether they realize it or not).

You may now proceed to off yourself.

My friends and I chipped in to buy a couple pizzas because it was cheaper that way than ordering individual slices, but I'd rather die than eat any of it and take handouts from the pizza delivery man.

One of the guys even wanted to give a leftover slice to the malnourished kid down the hall!! Proof that anyone who eats pizza is a leech and should die.

He has already mentioned the people he knows actually are hardcore the other way.
It's never the ones we know and can actually talk to
The Mexicans I know are hard working great people
It's the ones on YouTube that are the bad ones
The Muslims I know are great people
The ones on the YouTube are the evil ones
It's always the other ones that we have to worry about

No one is cradle to grave dependent on programs like this, no matter how much idiotic rightwing propaganda you swallow.
Also you'd line up for benefits without question if it was necessary, to say otherwise is simply lying. Privileged people always say something like "I'll never take government money!", then apply for a home loan, school loan, SBA loan, or any number of government subsidized program.

wrong. My brothers would certainly take care of me not to mention the fact that I could work if I really wanted to. I'd also inherit more money the less the govt inflated and taxed to spend on the govt.

You're wrong again.

So you could work but don't. You choose to allow others to pay for your daily needs. Should your parents be unable your first thought is your brothers can do it. And hey, if your parents die you get you some. And you think this makes you self sufficient in some way?

You're a leech.

Unemployment != a handout
Disability != a handout
Obamaphone != a handout (and btw, it's the just as much the Bushphone)
Food Stamps != now we are on to something...
Tuition reimbursement != a handout

I think you are very, very confused and deflecting what the problems really is. Perhaps more introspection and less finger pointing...

I'd rather rebel against Congress than accept handouts.

Well you are safe from the unemployment and disability programs anyway. One has to have actually held a job to eligible for these programs and as you have stated repeatedly that you refuse to seek employment you have no worries.

It's perfectly normal to feel ashamed when you have to take a handout
Agreed, and we need more of it. Not so normal to choose death though. There's pride and there's stupidity, and too much pride becomes stupidity.

If one honestly needs charity, one should humbly accept it and work to no longer need it. And if it is not possible to no longer need it - we don't completely control our lives - then one should humbly rejoice that this Christian (and Jewish, and Islamic) duty is available. A good person on the dole is probably worth more to society than the cost to maintain him.
