Update: Got a photo of Harrison and I next to each other. It was with my cell phone, so it is crappy. HarrisonFord.JPG

Not a rant. I just wanted to share my day.

So, I set the whole day aside, cleaned up everything in the lab. It went from a mess to almost respectable. I was not given a time to see him, just that he'll be stopping by and that we are to give him a tour. Thus, I just whiled away my time doing busy work in the lab. Suddenly I'm told he'll be there at 2 pm. 2 pm comes by, then 3 pm, then at 3:45 I'm told my lab isn't trashy enough. He wants to see a low budget lab since that is what will be in the movie.

All that cleaning gone to waste. I did see him walk the hallway though.

Anyone else have a brush with the famous?

You should have just left it dirty so he could see what a lab is really like. By cleaning it, don't you defeat the whole purpose?

Well, I wasn't told that he wanted to see a grungy lab. I figured he wanted to see how mu research could be applied to the movie topic. Now I'm a bit offended as to why he chose my department (University of Nebraska). Did he just think we'd be money hungry.

You got punked. Harrison Ford was never coming to see your lab.

He's currently in Brazil getting a penis tuck, anyway. Women had started to refer to him as "Flappy." As an international man of action, he got right on that.

Did Ford show up @ dullard's lab? No? I rest my case.

OP, what field are you in?
I believe that the item you are thinking of is a booby. I don't know if they exist in South Africa.

I do research and development into rapid polymerase chain reactions. I basically design machines for the detection of diseases. But, the machines are also useful for building custom genes more accurately that by any other similar method (an angle that I thought Ford might like). Our main focus right now is a $5 test for drug resistant tuberculosis in under 1 hour so that the patient can have proper medication before leaving the doctor (as opposed to the common 4-6 week tests).

so some kind of juiced-up RT-PCR? Still takes us ~2-3 hours to run a normal assay.

My PCR machines typically complete in 5-10 minutes. We've gone as fast as 78 seconds (faint but visible band on a gel) for 30 cycles. I do some design on real time PCR, but that isn't yet perfected. We've done real time PCR in a few minutes though. It's 2 years old, but this lists some of my publications.
