I got a call from the HR department of a big power company today offering me a summer engineering internship at a nuclear power plant working in the scheduling and planning department.

No one was really sure what I would be doing, apprently it would be business, logistics managing, some programming - almost as if they needed a jack-of-all-trades person. I'm finishing up my 2nd year as a CE major so this isn't the dream Software engineering internship but sounds like a winner because it pays >$15/hour and is within a drive from home. Heck at that rate I'd make coffee and serve dessert for the summer :)

I said I'd get back to them on Monday. I wanted to think it over.

EDIT: I accepted!

Yeah, congrats! And don't be so surprised that you didn't get an internship in your exact field...internships are hard to get, flat out, let alone one that's exactly what you want. ;)

Well I accepted. Let the fun begin... Background and drug tests that is.

Anyone have any experience of what to expect?

thats awesome! internships are soo fun! and even if you do hate it, which some do, its only for the summer so you can quit with a good reason and use it as a reference.

and if you screw something up, just say "well, i'm an intern."

Sure. If you are squeaky clean, no problem. Otherwise, don't admit anything beyond possibly having tried MJ regardless of what they say. They tell you that the worst thing you can do is lie in the hopes of having you spill the beans when in reality, they are looking for a confession and a reason to recommend not hiring you.

Of course, this is only if they send you for a "security review" and not just a simple drug test.

Hey they pay for my student membership to the "American Nuclear Society" and I get paid to volunteer for one of their conferences in Pittsburgh.

So, you've got no worries then. I was just referring to a security review some jobs require (usually if the company has a large insurance policy against their employees).

it will probably just be a UA
and if youve never done drugs or been around second hand MJ smoke within the week (maybe even less) before your test, then you'll pass.
