I've tried many times, and have failed....it's a very bad habbit, my nails are atrocious, all bitten....what's an easy way of trying to stop? I sometimes don't even notice myself :(

put sh!t on your fingers. If you bite them, it tastes like sh!t, i don't think you'd bite them anymore.

just heard this, they say you can buy some type of liquid that you can put on your fingers that tastes really bad but not harmful to your body. The main reason for that bad taste is for the problem you're having right now.

They sell it at the pharmacy; ask for the stuff you use to make small children stop sucking their thumbs.

Undiluted household bleach would probably work great too.

You might have a form of OCD.

There are many that now believe that compulsive hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting form a subgroup of what is becoming known as the Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder Spectrum. OCD has been previously been regarded as only a single disorder. It may in fact represent a range of related disorders, including classic OCD, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, Trichotillomania, Onychophagia, Compulsive Skin Picking, Compulsive Nail Biting, and Tourette's Syndrome. Recently, a new term has been coined for these problems - Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs). As with trichotillomania, skin picking and nail biting are considered to originate within the chemistry of the brain, and may well have an underlying genetic cause.

I've been a nail biter since early childhood. Remember doing it at age 7 for sure. Now 39 and still a nail biter. I have never bitten them to where they get infected or bleeding but I do nail bite enough for them to be very short. Try talking to your doctor for advice.

I tried that about 6 years ago.

It didn't work needless to say the taste wasn't bad and some how I got used to it.
I still bite my nails and its a bad problem although I've also moved to chewing on the skins around the tips of my fingers.

I believe its just from stress personally, and bad daily scheduling.

For a couple weeks about a month ago, I was totally relaxed and had no work to do and upon returning to doing work, I bit my nail and noticed they were almost all healed.

Needless to say they aren't anymore.

Luckily my finger tips don't bother my wife.
Sometimes I feel bad when I have to shake someones hand, but I can't really help it, I've tried to stop and its totally something I don't even notice just like you.

I take vitamin supplements too.

So I have no clue what it could be maybe you just can't stop it.

If you find something that helps let us know. :)

Cheap version:

1. Don't wash your ears.
2. Stick your fingers in your ears all the time.

I bet that would do the trick.
