Well... this really wouldn't be a company. My goal is to setup a webserver and get enough customers on it just to pay for itself. That way all of my website projects I want to do will cost no more than registering the domain name.

Resell dixiesys. The problems that come with co-location or setting up your own center are much too complicated for this attitude. (not an insult in any way!)

how are you going to deal with the accounting of bandwidth? Are you just going to allow anyone to setup a site and give them unlimited bandwidth? Bandwidth costs money and I highly
doubt someone will co-locate it for free.

Yes but it's not always easy to setup... For where I work, our Cisco router keeps track of all the traffic... a Perl script on a machine imports the data every so often. A very large custom perl script analyzes these files and puts the final results in a database. Then out billing software has been configured to be able to check the traffic in the database and bill customers accordingly. This of course allows us to penny pinch every cent for bandwidth because it covers FTP access as well. This came in handy when someone decided to use their hosting as an FTP server (ftp on oc3 = yummy). After transferring 30GB over FTP they weren't very happy with their bill (their plan allowed 5gigs).

Web-hosting isn't so simple when you have to factor in all the accounting and administration... my hobby server is 100x easier to manage than my work ones...

okay well maybe I ought just setup a hobby server to start

I think what I'll do is propose a plan to upper management where I work to start an internal web server that we can offer to our clients for a decent fee, with permission for me to use the unused disk space and bandwidth for my personal sites... I doubt I'll get much more than a T1 though, unless there is a really good deal on T3's around here.
