this topic sounds familiar, deja vu, I did a search and I don't think I've posted about this before  sorry if I have

I want to setup my own web server. I want to be able to resell host space. Anybody here already doing this? Can you give me any pointers? How soon did you get a ROI?

First order of business, change your AT nickname to CEO SagaLore and always talk about yourself in the third person.

1. More power to you, but understand the following
2. You are trying to enter into a VERY cut throat market
3. What sort of bandwith are you going to use?
4. What kind of guarantees are you going to make?

First of all, how much bandwith do you have? You sound pretty clueless for someone who wants to start web hosting company :)

What OS are you going to use? Will you be supporting CGI/perl/PHP/ASP? Do you have a legit license for all the software on the box?

I run and operate ~12 webservers (13 if you include my home one)... I suggest you make numerous posts in the OS's forum regarding what OS to choose... numerouse posts in the Software forum regarding web server software and applications... last but not least numerous posts in the Networking forum.

Umm... you are aware that you will have to be dialed-up 24/7, right? Also with a 14.4 connection you could probably server 5-10 connections if the site is all HTML based and the files are a couple K in size. I've never
used a Mac as a webserver so I have no comment on that... I bought my home webserver for $50cdn in the last week I have done over 1.7GB of traffic My home server stats (site hosted from home too :p). I don't think I can give you my works servers... if they gave em away, I would horde them to my selfish self :p

I will start with the non-fun absolute minimum necessities (if you are going to post in the other forums, or atleast SEARCH IN THEM, stop me because Ive posted most of this before :D):

1. *SECURE* location. bomb shelters are nice
2. UPS, 10-20 minutes minimum for *EVERYTHING*
3. Air conditioning, duh
4. Generator, for those oh crap WTF did my power company do?!
5. Staff to man the phones at all hours (and I mean *ALL*) and staff to monitor the server(s), router(s), internet connection(s), etc at *all* hours.

Price that and come on back if you are still interrested. :)

As for location, I'd check out MFN. I used to work for a hosting company. They located there servers in MFN's San Jose building. Very fast service, great power protection, excellent security.

ok seriously -

ndee: I'm not sure. Initially, a full T1 is pricey for me. So maybe a fractional T1? Or should I just rent space at a rack provider?

bmacd: If I really have to, I just linux, but I'm so much more familiar with Windows 2000.

Mucman: seriously, can I have one of your servers? :D

co-locate or resell dixiesys

Win2k is more expensive, is not as easy to remotely administer, and can be quite time consuming when patches appear...

lol. Play around with apache if you want to get your feet wet in win2k. If you eventually migrate to linux, it's a whole other world over there.
