My brother's been living in Sydney since Sept 06. This is what he loves about Australia:
1) No racism
2) Cops are friendly
3) People are ultra-friendly
4) The women are hot
5) The climate is splendid

This is what he doesn't like:
1) Traffic fines are a b!tch
2) Parking is a b!tch
3) Working part-time at a convenience store in the red light area can be hazardous to your life (William Street?) :p

Ive been to australia and it was really nice.

One problem I would have is concerts. One of the things I love the most in life is going to concerts and if you look at the tours of most bands...they dont include australia. Like radiohead....they go there but not often at all.

We've had some good stuff recently.

Perth certainly usually gets a bit ripped off tho.

yeah i am not saying you dont get concerts...just no where near the amount you get living in the North East of America, Europe, or even Japan.

it is no problem to move to any country if you have either money or skills the country needs

if not, you are *undesirable* - except as a Tourist ... when your visa expires, out you go

and unfortunately, Americans *can't* get by, teaching English
:D

seriously ... to the OP ... at least vacation there ... before you commit ...
i have lived in Ireland for 3 years and months in Brasil ... it is very different from the USA
[i loved both experiences]

maybe you just need a *change* ;)

I wonder how hard it would be to get a business job there as an american. I heard the economy is doing quite well there.

basically there are two ways to go about it ... one is just to 'go' as a tourist ... with tons of money and apply and start the *process* from within your new country ... it is quickest

the other way is to *apply* for immigration to your desired country ... you will fill out documents and *prove* you have the skills or the start-up capital for your business

and it must not be a business that is "popular" .. they don't want you putting their natives out of work ... if you are an "employer" your chances are a lot better.

why not "Hawaii" --it is a real change from the other 49 ?

i *did just that* it is 'another world'

man AU sounds like an awesome place to live. My friend backpacked thru Australia for 3 months after spending 6 months studying abroad in Sydney. He said that was the best time of his life. I so want to take a month off and visit Australia and New Zealand

Wrong...Sydney does hold the title of the second gayest city in the world.....next to San Francisco....and yes, we also have an endless supply of homeless bums there as well.

I found this thread as I am looking into the same thing. As one person said it's not all that hard to get in, however they are really picky. If you have the right skills and meet the other requirements (age, education, police background, medical, etc.) you can get in.

Thought about it for a while now, I'm looking at going there for a couple of reasons. I need a big change of scenery. I love scuba diving. Granted gas is gonna cost me a fortune, but overall cost of living is MUCH lower than DC.

I'm about to start my skills assessment. I'm guessing from what I've read the whole process will take around 8 months or so to get my skills work visa. +around $2000 USD for visa and application fees. ($5000 USD if I wan't someone else to apply in my behalf) and I'm gonna save up around $10,000 USD so I can go down there and have some time to look for a job.
