I got a text message today with my Verizon bill----it was $396.80. WTcapitalF???!!!!!! That's like $220 more than normal!!!!!

Turns out my daughter is on a 1500/month text message plan, and all Verizon network texts are umlimited. Well, she sent out 4000 (FOUR + 3 ZEROS) text messages last month- over half of which were off network. That breaks down to ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY OUTGOING TEXTS PER DAY!!!!!!! How can you possibly do that????? Well, she found a way.

No matter what I do to her, I'm still stuck with a $400 Verizon bill. Looks like I'm working for Verizon this week :| Anyone in the same boat?

Take her phone away, tell her no phone until she pays for it herself? And make her build up a $500 kitty in case she overspends again, since even if she gets a job, you'll be responsible for the bill so long as she's a dependent.

Ding ding ding, winner!

It's not like she couldn't get unlimited text and only pay like $30/month or whatever instead of an extra $220

Call verizon and say you had no idea this would happen, blah blah blah, say you want to upgrade to the unlimited text plan and they should wave the charges. They did when my brother did that.

To defend your daughter a little... it's really easy to send 4k text messages.

edit: make her pay for it... learn her some responsibility.

That's nothing!

My dad had to deal with my sisters... we were in vancouver for a week or so and my sisters were keeping up with their normal 4000-5000 texts a month. So about 1000 were sent out of country (Canada to US). The bill was like $1200 or something.

Within a few months of that bill, somehow they got it up to $800 or so again.

Lessons learned...pay the extra $5/month for unlimited texting. Its been established for a long time that children do not stay within their cell phone boundaries. Go with a plan with an unbreakable limit, or go with unlimited.

Smash her phone in front of her and get her a prepaid cell.

Heh the worst phone bill I caused was $180 for calling all sorts of long distance BBSes.

Did you just find that out? Did anyone ever tell her that it wasn't an unlimited plan?

I'd be annoyed too, but if no one told her it was a limited plan I'd have to blame myself.

When I was in the Navy I talked my GF for an hour once from the Philippines. Collect. Was at least $200, her mom was a little pissed.

As far as the OP's daughter, just break her thumbs.

That's not as bad when I thought my phone's IM client used data (especially when you log off and it has a pop-up that says how much data it used) instead of SMS, so I used it sparingly... then I realized that my phone actually used SMS and I had no text message plan. I had easily racked up around 200+ text messages at 15 cents a piece ( note that I very rarely use text messages before that, hence no plan ). So now I just have a 200 text plan along with unlimited data which my new phone uses a data mobile IM client so I'm good.

What's sad is that these teenage girls can type faster on a cell phone than they can on a computer...

Call Verizon, say some in-store rep said it was unlimited. You just now found out it wasn't, and you'd like to be bumped up to unlimited text messaging. If they can get you to pay more on your original bill, they will probably waive the charges to do so.

You can also threaten to cancel service, that works too.

Take away the phone until she pays for the bill. Give it back only after that. If it happens again, take it away for good and tell her she has to get a job and her own account if she wants a phone.

WTF indeed. She clearly has a problem and you gotta send her to some counseling or something. Maybe get her a hobby.

I was looking from the standpoint that 1500 messages is on average 50 a day.....that's a stupid amount. 130 a day is freaking insane. The highest available on my plan is 5000/month for $20.
