I want to join a gym.

So ive been doing cardio for few months now. Running, biking, and elliptical. Ive dropped from 195 to around 170 and feel alot better. Even with the weight loss i still look saggy lol. No definition in my arms and chest. Ive been looking at this local gym and might join. While i want to look more lean i dont want to look big. My ideal look is the guy in this pic.

Hes looks very lean and strong but not big. Ive been looking at workout plans with each day you work on one muscle group. Seems that i want a high rep low weight to achieve a tone look. From what ive been reading the more protein you eat after the work out the bigger your muscles will be, is that true?

If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated.
 
You can't accidentally get big. You'll be hard pressed to look like Mr. Reynolds there. Start out by lifting weights at all, get yourself some kind of program, and read voraciously. Don't just listen to other guys, either here or down at the gym.

As for nutrition, do some googling.

First of all, Ryan Reynolds is big as hell in that movie. Plus, he has good genetics. He's super lean (partially genetics) and has quite good size. Before he cut, I imagine he was pretty huge. If you wanted to look like him, you would have to be very serious about your lifting, get big, and then cut a ton of fat off of yourself through a cutting phase.
 
I should clarify i dont want to look like Reynolds, he just has the body type that would be easy to show with a piture. I know it will be impossible for me to look exactly like him but thats not the point. I just want a toned look without being big. But would you say a high rep low weight would be better for that type of look.

If this were true, I'd just binge on protein powder after every workout and watch as they grow! 😀

You need to take in protein so that your muscles get the necessary nutrients to heal and repair and grow, yes - it's not exactly a direct relationship though, not in your terms at least.
 
Well, I guess recommending Stronglifts it out of style now since I haven't seen anyone recommend it but I will. Go to www.stronglifts.com and look up the "Stronglifts 5x5 Beginning Strength training program" on the left side of the screen.

The program is about becoming stronger and not necessarily big. Like other said, becoming big doesn't just happen. That should be the least of your worries. All you'd have to do if you became to big is stop what you're doing.

Anyways, read through the article and see what you think. Lastly, and most importantly, any program you ever use can be completely pointless unless your diet is in check.
 
look into bodybuilding. and yes eat a lot and lots of protein to get that volume.

to get that strong you'll have to lift hard and eat right.

that would be nice to have to worry about getting too big. lol.

and btw he has a low body fat % but is still very big. tack on a little cardio to your heavy weight lifting.

"I don't want to be big" is the calling card of the person who has never lifted, the person who doesn't realize that you'd be lucky to have visible differences in the way your body looks after a year of lifting.

High rep low weight and high weight low rep are similar actions assuming your exercise is under 2 minutes (eventually the exercise turns into cardio). There are 3 elements you can increase while working out, the time between exercises (and speed), the number of reps/sets and the weight. All have the same goal, to create muscle growth. This assumes form is perfect throughout. Now there are things such as the differences between strength training and hypertrophy, but these things could be considered advanced topics that shouldn't affect the beginner.

The protein you get helps rebuild muscle, it doesn't make you grow more muscle. Any time your body has to rebuild muscle it builds it back stronger, supposedly. You can either have not enough protein, too much protein or enough protein. That's it. You are shooting for "enough".
 
Just start working out hard. Well..don't start your very first workout lifting like a maniac, but work up to your lifting ability. Don't hold back for fear that you might blow up overnight is what I'm really trying to say. I promise you'll have PLENTY of time to dial back your routine if it looks like your muscles are growing too much at any point. More likely you'll struggle to even get close to that picture.
