I want to buy a suit

I want to buy a full suit, but I don't want to get ripped off. And I don't want to buy something cheap either. I know absolutely nothing about buying a suit, any tips/recommendations?

Brooks Brothers outlet store. You can get a suit there for $300, sometimes less if you sign up for a Brooks card (I got one for $225 about a month ago).

In word of warning is that they will try to get you to buy ties, shirts, belts, and even shoes. If you have all of these updated items then after you decide on a suit and they will go into their up-selling phase. Push hard back with just the suit.

If you have a Dillards department store at the mall, they usually have very nice suits at reasonable prices. I paid under $200 for a Tommy Hilfiger suit and tailoring there.

Men's Warehouse has some very heavy sales pressure. If you don't like that I wouldn't go there. Check out some department stores as mentioned.

You should have bought on Black Friday.. they are often 50%.

However, there will still be some really good sales for the holidays. Go to Bloomingdales, Nordstroms or Macys if you want something in the $250-800 range.

If you have a Nordstrom Rack, that's a great place to get a suit. You can get a quality midrange suit (e.g., Joseph Abboud, Kenneth Cole) for under $300, or a Hugo Boss-level suit for under $500.

Salvation Army. Got a 3 piece (coat, pants & vest) for $30.

This is fine if you're a teenager or very lucky, but in general a $30 Salvation Army suit is going to look like a $30 Salvation Army suit. In my experience, when I need a suit, it's for something important (work, weddings/funerals, or job interviews), and I'm not comfortable wearing a dead man's 1978 Cricketeer suit.

Actually, there are many times when a Salvation Army suit is no worse than a brand new $300 suit. It doesn't matter where you buy it if it looks good and fits.

QFT. I think I'm going to check out Men's Wearhouse. Thanks, guys.

yeah, I might check out Men's Wearhouse and a few other places too. How long does it normally take for them to tailor the suit?

I can't see it. I actually used to shop SA a lot as a teenager, and still occasionally shop at high-end consignment stores and vintage clothing stores. Ultimately, I think buying a $30 suit is pennywise but pound foolish (except in the unusual event of finding a recent, fresh suit that fits properly, but that is a highly unusual thing shopping at Salvation Army).

It depends on what needs to be done, but in any case it should be less than a week. Adjusting the hem and waistband on pants can be done within an hour or two if time is critical.
