FYI, ferrets are relatively high maintenance. You cant just figure you'll buy a cage and some food and thats it. They need lots of playtime and supervision out of their cage. Usually its best to get two ferrets because a lonely ferret can be an unhappy and sad ferret. I have owned and cared for many ferrets in the past, and while they are lots of fun, they can be expensive animals to own.

I work 8:30-5:30 each day. Would it be a problem to get 2 ferrets and a large cage, and take them out to play before and after I go to work?

I used to do exactly that. Well, I didn't get them out in the morning, but I just let them out when I got home from work. They sleep A LOT, so it isn't really a problem to cage them for most of the day. Certainly, 2 ferrets are better than 1 for this, as well.

Also, like MX2 said, ordinary cat food won't really do. They need a higher-protein diet. Usually you can find some high-protein KITTEN food that will work fine.

My GF and I used to have rats. They are very smart and personable and trainable. They are kind of like little dogs we found. Like ferrets they need daily attention and its best if you get at least two at a time. The females tend to be more active when older while males tend to mellow out when older.

If you do get a rat try to get one from a reputable pet store. Rats that are handled from very young and bred from a good stock make awesome pets, rats that were never handled or bred from lab stock or some such seem to never grow out of bad habits like nipping.

Any suggestions? It would be great to have something small yet trainable, preferably furry.

Not going to happen...
