Update: decided to get a pair of pet rats! I found a Colorado breeder's site and couldn't resist (that and my landlord said I'd have to put down a $600 pet deposit if I got ferrets 😛).

Any suggestions? It would be great to have something small yet trainable, preferably furry.

Well, I'd like to be able to let it out and not have it get lost in the house, so it seems like a mouse/gerbil/hamster wouldn't be a good bet. I was actually told that rats are cool cause they're smart enough to be trained.
 
tell the roomate to stfu and get used to the pet. I've had my cat for 6 years now and I was badly allergic to him for a while, finally got used to him and now it isn't so bad. If your roommate doesn't sleep with the cat on their face, it's not goanna be a problem..

And yes I'm still technically allergic as when my cat scratches me, the cut swells up.. I used to get a running nose pretty badly when we first got him, then it went down to a little running nose and finally if I'm with my cat long enough it becomes just a simple irritatant and nothing else. And thats with having the cat on your bed or sleeping on your chest or something, he doesn't bother me at all when hes just roaming around...

Why would I want to do something that would make my roommates sick? If I already had the pet that's one thing, but what you're suggesting is just selfish. Besides, our house is dog/cat not allowed, and it's not worth risking the deposit for.

edit: if anyone has experience with their suggestions I'd like to hear em. Ferret was another on my list of possibilities.
 
My son has a ferret; it's a pretty cool pet that actually seems to have a personality. Pets without personalities (or with the personality of most cats) are poor pets (imho.) Our ferret loves to ambush one of our cats when we allow her to run loose.
 
Ferret or rabbit FTW. You can house train rabbits. Let them choose a spot to do their thing and then just put a litter box there. They like going in one spot, but will change it every few months.

Dude. Some people are not just "allergic" to cats - it can badly exacerbate asthma.
 
rabbits will chew on wires

they are cool, but will chew wires, like lamp cords, you have to take care of the wires

FYI, ferrets are relatively high maintenance. You cant just figure you'll buy a cage and some food and thats it. They need lots of playtime and supervision out of their cage. Usually its best to get two ferrets because a lonely ferret can be an unhappy and sad ferret. I have owned and cared for many ferrets in the past, and while they are lots of fun, they can be expensive animals to own.

Yeah, rabbits would also make a really cool house pet. Tip: if you select a rabbit, attempt to turn the rabbit upside down and cradle it in your arms. If it kicks and scratches at you, choose a different rabbit.

I work 8:30-5:30 each day. Would it be a problem to get 2 ferrets and a large cage, and take them out to play before and after I go to work?

Not at all. Thats reasonable.

Also, some folks tend to buy cat food for ferrets and they really need the special nutrition needs that are found in ferret food. Supplements are also good for them at the direction of a vet. They also like peanut butter (they lick it right off the spoon), and raisins for treats🙂
