I upgraded and things are running slower?!

I upgraded my mobo from a POS Dell mobo to an Asus p4pe and I upgraded from 256mb to 512mb RAM. I ran PCMark and compaired my scores from my old setup (the score was taken last week) to my new one (taken 2 mins ago). Now I know its not wise to go by PCMark scores, but I've noticed my computer is a little bit sluggish compaired to what I had before.

Ummm. What the f?

Why the hell is double the RAM and a better mobo making my computer run SLOWER? How can I fix/change this.

Here are the PCMark scores:

Score from 11/11/02: CPU 4420 Mem 4199 HDD 826
Score from 11/28/02: CPU 4555 Mem 3809 HDD 938

Win XP and yes. I also have Mandrake Linux on here and I ran it under Linux. Things were also sluggish.

I know the DIMMS are pluged in correctly because my System menu tells me i have 512mb of RAM

If you added 256megs of different memory to the 256 that you already had, your memory may have been reduced to the highest common supported timings. First thing I'd try is tweaking memory settings in bios.

I ordered and put in 2 new sticks of pc2700 256mb RDRAM. Even my 3DMark score is drastically lower!:

Score:
9/25/02: Score 6497
11/28/02: Score 5125

pc2700 is DDR not RDRAM. what did u have in there before? you might have switched from RDRAM to DDR. DDR is slower

LMAO - you can't switch from either type. They's like trying to plug a USB cable into a firewire slot 😉

You can if you got a new DDR motherboard...
if he doesn't know if he was running RDRAM before, he may have been!

Based on the system specs in your profile you have gone from pc800(RDRAM) to PC2700(DDR) memory. Perhaps your old dell mobo wasn't such a pos after all.

I don't think anythings wrong. Have you compared your score to similar setups at orb? The only score that's lower on the new setup is the memory his cpu and hd scores went up. So what's the problem just make sure your divider for the memory is set so your running it at ddr-333. Then your memory score should go up if your running at ddr266 right know.

Where would I go about changing that setting Viper? I looked in my BIOS setup and the only thing that had DDR in the title was changing the DDR voltage or something. Is it in the bios where I need to change it?

You will want to look for memory timing settings. These should help you to increase the potential out of your memory. The P4 is a memory hog (it enjoys more bandwidth or it will be drastically slower). Ahhh seems you have a Willamette P4 1.9 and a GF3. I would still think that the 3dmarks would be higher than what you are getting though.

Yes, you are being limited with your memory now cause you were using RDram before, but I would look in the bios to change your memory settings.

Go to advanced bios screen with cpu speed, multiplier, cpu/memory frequency ratio etc. Select 333 on the cpu/memory ratio. If your fsb is 100 it may not have the option. Might have to overclock the fsb to 133mhz if your using a 100mhz fsb cpu.

Have you got all the latest mobo bios and stuff?

I know on my Abit KR7A, without the VIA AGP drives reinstalled it runs like a pos on games. Check all the drivers for everything and update if you can, and check the RAM timings as people have said.

Well.... I changed the Memory Freq from "Auto" to "267mhz" and ran PCMark again and I can proudly say EVERYTHING IS RUNNING SLOWER THAN IT WAS BEFORE. WHAT THE $!@#?! I can't flash my BIOS for some reason. I get the "Non system disk" error at boot. What can I do to change this? I am really at my wits end.

Here are the scores if anyone is interested: CPU 4533 Mem 3714 HDD 741

PS: My mobo tells me I can't OC that much. It says other hardware's frequencies did something.

I don't want to say it, but a format might help you. Before you do though, make sure you are running the same kind of RAM in both of your RAM slots; if you were not doing this, they would run at the slowest supported speed.

PC2700's default is 166MHz DDR (333 MHz DDR)...

Fck it unless you got it to run pcmark 24/7. I actually like to use mine to play games and do some work. Your running at 267 isn't faster than before. You have to tell it your using a 133mhz fsb p4 instead of a 100mhz version. You can only get the divider for ddr333 if your running a 133 mhz fsb p4. You'll have to overclock your p4. If it is a 100Mhz version hopefully its an A version.
I get 4919cpu/4814 mem/828HD
using a 1.6A P4 @133mhz=2.13
512mb pc-2700 samsung 2/6/3/3

Ok Ok. I am probably going to return the RAM to Newegg. Should I also return the Mobo? I know its a dumb question, but can I throw RDRAM in to an Asus P4pe? Could someone recommend a RAM/Mobo combo if I need to return both? I got the new mobo because I wanted to Overclock and I am a hardcore gamer. Money isn't too big of an issue, but I don't want to spend more than $130 on a mobo and $80-90 on 1 stick of ram. Thanks for the help guys. I dunno what I would have done without it.

but can I throw RDRAM in to an Asus P4pe?
nope

oh and I thought I[d mention, if your old Dell mobo did use RDRAM, then its no suprise that PCMark has some higher Memory scores on your old Dell mobo than the P4PE with DDR333. DDR333 gives only 2.7GBs, PC800 RDRAM on 850e gives 3.2GBs, and PC1066 on 850e gives 4.2GBs

Do you get the feeling he's not listening? You've spelled out a couple times what jodathmorr needs to do, but he would rather RMA perfectly good equipment.

I set the only option on my mobo bios that changes anything with the RAM freq

I'm pretty sure I said that my bios told my i can't overclock that much. Maybe if you read responses you would have caught that Grame.
