I Took the Plunge! (A Tale of Sushi)

Well, I finally did it...

For years I have been eating California Rolls and other non-raw type sushis...

Today, I had tuna and salmon rolls!

I liked the taste but am still a little uncomfortable with the texture.

Anyone else experienced in sushi?

How did you get over that slightly queasy feeling, if you had it?

I guess I should just keep eating them until I get over myself?

I hate sushi.

Ever had Rocky Mountain oyster's unknowingly? The look on people's faces when you tell them what it is, is priceless😀

I eat Tuna rolls almost every day for lunch. I love the taste and texture. Only time I got queasy(sp?) was when I tried octupus... didn't like it at all. Sea Urchin is good stuff too... try that.

Rocky Mountain Oysters are pretty good. Then again my friends tell me I'll eat anything. i once saw a girl literally turn green when she found out what they really are. 🙂

Oh.. I like sushi and sashimi

Sushi is great! I try and get it whenever I can. My favorite are the two that you mentioned. Salmon and Tuna.

I do have a few suggestions: Try different Sushi bars. You will find a big difference from one to the other. Don't let price get in your way, I've been at one Sushi bar where a Tuna cost $1.50 and another at $6.00. Many times the various grades of fish will cost more. All Salman is not the same!

As for getting over the squeshy fish feeling ?? Salmon should always be eaten rare. Perhaps medium rare for the beginner. Savor the taste, its great. Keep trying it, you'll like it!

if you liked the taste, i'm sure that you would get used to it eventually if you continued eating it. I personally like the sushi with eel. I also like the octopus, squid, basically i like seafood and will eat any type of seafood there is..😀

Thanks guys. I guess it's just a matter of getting over the thought that it is not cooked... but I eat lots of other things raw, so why not fresh, clean fish?

Other than that, it was excellent.

The Tuna was definitely better than the Salmon, so next time I will shop around. 🙂

edit: LOL, TRP... It's taken me nearly 33 years to get to the point of trying! You might like California Rolls... nothing raw there.

For me, queasy feeling after eating = food goes on the not-gonna-eat-it-any-more list.

I've never been one to "work up to" liking foods. Probably because there are too many things I already like.

My grandfather used to say "Always eat a live toad first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day." And that's probably why I'll not be eating any sushi.

But good luck to you, Isla! 🙂

Yes, agreed, the Tuna is much better than the Salmon. A few years ago I was on vacation in Hawaii and the hotel I was staying at had a sushi bar. They had the absolute best sushi I had ever tasted. The Tuna was exceptionally good, supposedly it came straight from Hawaii's coast. But who knows...I'm tempted to believe them however, because it tasted so damned good! 😀

I started eating the stuff when I was four years old. The concept that I was eating raw fish didn't really take hold at that age, all I knew was that I liked it. By the time I was old enough to comprehend it, I was already hooked 🙂

I like the non raw rolls more then fish.
Just to get to eat the rolls it took time to develop the palette for it.
Raw fish has that weird texture, hard to get used to.
Dont really eat too much fish, although tuna IS good any way its made.
I stick to the veggie rolls and such.
I guess its the general dislike for the fishy smell and taste.
🙂

Sushi is actually really tasty. The funny texture feeling goes away after the first couple times.

Want to try something totally different? Korean raw beef mixed with raw eggs. I was hesitant at first, but it was VERY TASTY.

Isla,

I usually get the smoked salmon. It isn't like the smoked salmon that you get from a can. It isn't smoked so much that it is cooked. It just has a lightly smoked flavor, and is delish.

You should also finish with sea eel (order after you have eaten everything else). Normally, teh sea eal is cooked and prepared in a ginger sauce. Served hot I've had people tell me it is better than sex. It is then that I know they must be married. 😉

Sashimi with green horseradish sauce is much better than Sushi.

I think I have Windoggs problem. Ill eat almost anything.

Turkey fries and Rocky Mountain oysters are great! Oysters, Squid, octopus (like eating rubber bands) get high ratings as well as the raw beef and egg combos.

Id love to try Fugu but probably never will.

Just remember, when eating any raw meat, fish or shellfish, you are taking a chance. Proper handling and preparation can still not avoid all problems like parasites and worms but what the hay, you only live once.

Once, just once, worst case of food poisoning I have ever gotten. I cannot even see sushi now without retching. 🙁 Luckily I didn't really like it all that much to begin with, so no big loss 🙂

When I was a kid, I wasn't down with eating raw fish. When I got to college, I realized the error of my ways. I think I was Japanese in a previous life, because I love every Japanese dish I've tried so far. I concur with Doggiedog, yellowtail is the bomb. My favorite types of sashimi are yellowtail, salmon and grouper. I dig the tuna too. The grouper was really expensive, but so worth it. I would rather eat fish raw rather than cooked, especially salmon. I think it tastes much better.

I don't remember having qualms about eating raw fish once I got older. I think I just did it, and realized how much I love it.

If you like spicy food, I definitely recommend adding some wasabi to your soy sauce for dipping.

late.

The key in eating raw fish is to have lots and lots of wasabi mixed with lots and lots of soy sauce, soak whatever you are eating completely inside the sauce.

Rocky Mountain Oysters = Fried Sheep Balls (usually)

No sushi here either... Just the thought of eating anything but vegetables raw turns my stomach. Of course, this is from someone who eats his meat medium well to well done.

<< Where I come from, they call this stuff bait! >>

😉

sushi is the best and i'm addicted to it. especially with lots of wasabe; so much to the point i'm in tears.

i heard that wasabe makes it safer to eat sushi cuz it kills the germs or something. anybody else heard of this before?

I tried it once and got those queasy feelings so I try to wash it down with some hot Saki. Almost puke cuz the Saki were too strong for me.
