I thought I loved my printer.. until

I havn't printed in a while. It's loaded with almost brand-new cartridges.

So I start printing off an essay for school to find that I get an error between every page telling me that the ink is expired. I have to hit 'ok' between every single page to allow it to continue to print. :disgust:

That leaves me few options.

  • Print pointless stuff all the time to make sure I get my moneys worth of ink before it expires
  • Endure the warnings between each page
  • Get hammer from toolbox.

So HP wants me to waste ink. That's not very 'green' of them. :disgust: 😀

/weak rant

Don't the heads also get gummed up if you don't print often enough?

I would hope the half-hour long maintainance it goes through each time it powers up would take care of that.

This is precisely why I loathe ink jet printers. I went laser years ago and haven't looked back since.

I feel ya there. I have a couple year old D7160, damn thing takes forever to turn on some times, and is loud as fuck as things inside go slamming around every which way.

I get the expired ink warnings, but with school I print often enough that I tend to be very low on ink by the time that happens. And with having 6 different cartridges, it's not much of an issue, just replace the low color.

HP printers are awful. They're the mainstream but christ, after using a Brother printer I'll never go back to an HP and their bullshit.

HP printers used to be the best around, now they are junk. They are not selling you a printer they are selling you a vehicle to shove expensive ink cartridges down your throat. Go get an inexpensive laser printer for papers and the majority of printing and get yourself a cheap color inkjet that you can get cheap inexpenisive generic refills for if you have to have color. You can always get a color laser but beware that toner cartridges are super expensive.

Polar opposite experience here.
I had a Brother for about 20 min. What a piece of cheap plastic crap.
It was returned and the replacement HP printer worked for 8 years straight after that.

When it finally died, I bought another HP, use Printer World Refills and have no complaints.

YMMV

That is ridiculous.
There is no printer manufacturer that doesn't use that business model.
I have had excellent results using Printer World cartridges in my 4 year old HP printer.
The adage, "you get what you pay for" holds true most of the time.

I propose you HP haters are just mad at "The Man" for some personal reason.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with the crappy products they've put out lately or the fact that all of their software tends to be bloated to hell and back...

Huh, my parents' 882C is now >10 years old and still works perfectly. They've been through dozens of print heads on that thing.

They definitely still make the best laser printers, even their lower end ones. The build quality differences are obvious.

Not sure if yours is the same, but run msconfig, go to startup tab, and disable HPWuSchd2, and HP Digital Imaging.

I'll give this a try.

Appreciate it.

+1 on laser printers. They're the best. If you really need color and you print enough, even consider a color laser. They hurt the wallet but you save in the long run. The quality is also incredible.

I got a Canon laser printer for maybe $110 or so last year and it's wonderful. Duplex output and ADF! So awesome. Before this I had a KM laser that also served me well (though I gotta say having duplex is amazingly great).

cool... what does this do? would this affect regular printing?

i know what you mean. i almost bought a Xerox Phaser until i priced out the cartridges.

$250 for the printer, $800 for a batch of 4 replacement ink cartridges.

i ended up getting the HP 1510, which cost about $300 and i think about $300 for the 4 cartridges.

i'm taking a Photoshop class and my color selection for backgrounds etc. is partially a function of who's paying for the ink (me !). suddenly i feel an increased tolerance for gray-scale images and white backgrounds. :music:

It *should* turn off the nag prompt. You really don't believe there's some sort of float check valve thingy in the ink chamber do you? Many ink cartridges have a circuit, which tells the printer, to tell the computer, to tell you, that your out of ink, even though you aren't.
Kind of like Micro$ofts' nag warning you that if you don't register your OS within 30 days something really really bad is going to happen.
Now, if I could just turn off the "check brakes" warning light on my dashboard, lol.

My printer has been telling me I have low ink for the past few months. Still prints well on these "nearly empty" cartridges.

Cheap-ass Canon scanner/copier/printer. I'll probably sell it at the end of my senior year and pick up a multi-function color laser for grad school.
