Dude you should contact the police right away, I saw on tv about people being scammed the same way only the money that was being sent was from stolen accounts and the person sending it goes to jail aka you!

You made so many mistakes here I don't know where to start
1. Any time you are asked to wire money by someone who is supposed to be paying you, it's a scam ALWAYS
2. You apparently felt early on that you were being scammed, but you continued to play right along. And you wait until it's painfully clear you have been scammed (check bounces) before taking any real action.
3. You turn to a internet message board for guidance, when you should have been communicating with the police, the bank, etc....
And as others said the "contiuing calls" reeks of shens, they have your money and I see no reason they would call you again, unless they think your stupid enough to wire more money.
If this is real I feel very sorry for you, but there is not much anyone including the police can do at this point, unless you get real lucky and the theives were stupid and left a trail (not likely). YOUR MONEY IS GONE, and it ain't coming back. Try and get over it the best you can and be smarter in the future.

I call shens. As much publicity as the nigerian scam has gotten over the last SEVERAL years, nobody is that stupid. Any minute now, the OP is going to come clean and make fun of the responses.

Not shens, I only turned to this board for help because I know how smart the people are here and thought someone would have a good contact number for me, or good web sites to look for help on. I am filing a police report this afternoon. I have been talking to the police, along with this board; I've just been trying to figure out the right people to talk to so I'm not on some wild goose chase. I know my money is gone, I just don't want to be arrested for check fraud or money laundering just because I was stupid.

I suggest you make a beeline for mexico now before the FBI puts you in a hole you'll never return from, they don't take kindly to terrorist funders.

You say you've always been "up on scams" but you've never heard of this fake check scam? It's one of the more common scams floating around lately. Also, the word Nigeria didn't send up a flag in your head? If this thread is true then I don't think you were "up on scams" at all.
If this is true then I wish you luck in getting your money back. I assume you have the phone number of the guy in Canada? Since the money was wired to Maryland you might have some recourse.

I was always up on scams in the past and had never heard of the check scam. I knew all the 419 stuff, the million-dollar-fund releases and stuff like that. I was very up on things when I was young and interested in learning about the hacker culture and all things that happen on the internet.
I do have about 5 numbers I was called with from Canada and one Nigerian number. Most of the Canadian numbers are from pay phones and the other number says it's no longer working. What a surpise...

I'll tell you, if I didn't think it would lead to even more phone calls and e-mails, I would love to get my own verbal revenge on these guys. They keep insisting I stole their money and I owe then, suprise, suprise. I would love to answer a call and e-mail and just say: "Oh man, you guys are right, I did accidentally take your money and I want to repay you. Now, I have a client in Nigeria who owes me some money. I'm going to have him wire you a check for $15,000. Please take out what I owe you and wire the rest back to me." Then send the scammer a check made out of construction paper and Crayons.

Shens, if not...you need to give your money to friends and family. You just got scammed BIG TIME.
