I've been applying almost every night. Sending out resumes and custom tailored cover letters, and have not gotten one invitation to interview yet.

anyone have luck recently?

I currently have a job and other employers are trying to get me to come work for them. It's not impossible to find a job, you just need to have connections and a desirable work history/skill set.

In person networking is the only way that will work in this environment.

A lunch or dinner meeting with a friend of a friend is the first step and then getting an interview.

You have to have a foot already in the door where you would like to get an interview.

For example knowing someone from here that posted that their company has an opening in the networking thread above is a start.

It can definitely be hard. I've been looking for one for a long time as well, no cigar yet.

All of my jobs, opportunities (only a handful) have come from knowing someone.

My recent applications for jobs have been ignored. One position was nearly perfect for me but I didn't hear back and I'm too stupid to call.

Have to be willing to relocate and probably take something less than what you had, but you can still find a job out there.

I feel your pain. I've applied to a bunch of jobs, no response (except for a few places decent enough to let you know when the position was filled). Currently have a work-at-home part time gig testing math problems, but that was because of connections...
Kinda sucks just coming out of a college without enough work experience to get people to consider you.

Stick with it, hopefully something will come along

It took me 9 months to find a job a little less than 2 years ago. I was right out of college and had about a year and a half of really good internship experience ...problem was that I had high expectations and did not want to relocate.

Despite signs that the economy has resumed growing, unemployed Americans now confront a job market that is bleaker than ever in the current recession, and employment prospects are still getting worse.

Job seekers now outnumber openings six to one, the worst ratio since the government began tracking open positions in 2000. According to the Labor Department?s latest numbers, from July, only 2.4 million full-time permanent jobs were open, with 14.5 million people officially unemployed.

Not a good time to be job hunting and why I told my Dad yesterday, "I'm still employed" when he asked me how my job was going. Because honestly, that's my #1 concern now and the thing I'm most thankful of right now. I don't want to be job hunting in this economy.

The only two fields that appear to be hiring right now are healthcare and government.

I've been unemployed for uh... 9 months now? I've been sending several resumes and turning in applications daily for the last 9 months.

Guess how many calls I've had for an interview.. 0 (that is ZERO).

What happened to the time when you turned in 3 applications.. and then got 3 phone calls within a week? *sigh*

I've extended my unemployment twice now and only have 6 weeks left.

Just lost my gf of 4 years.. and my car is about to fail. Need to go to dentist and doctors.. no insurance.

Good times.. good times.

It is bad out there now.

I read that if you need a job, you are competing with 5 other people for the same job. That is right, 6 jobseekers for 1 job openning.

Good luck to all that are looking.

I do not know about healthcare but government is not a safe bet lately.

Dallas, TX just cut about 800 jobs last month. Atlanta, GA cut a few hundreds. Louisiana State is considering cutting at least a few hundreds state jobs.

State and local governments (large and small) are freezing jobs or cut salaries/benefits or increase healthcare premiums or all of the above due to lower revenue streams (lower sale tax, lower property tax) and higher expenses (pay more to unemployment benefits, more people request for help).

Probably should have specified Federal Government (+1.3% since Dec '08).

I think that might have been the most depressing thing I've read in a while. That really sucks.
What industry(ies?) have you been applying to?

Not in the last year. 1 interview out of about 300 fully qualified applications/resumes. Then again I'm in one of the worst employment areas of the country, hovering between 12 and 18 percent this whole year. Given my extreme spotty work history it's a given that I get tossed when so many people with better histories are looking.

Market really is awful. I'm very thankful to have a decent job with a decent company in health care. Every office (non nursing/hospital) job opening we have, which is very few, we get 1000+ applications in the span of a few days. The last AP job that opened up he didn't even get through 25% of the resumes and we ended up hiring someone who was a temp for us previously. I'm assuming this is very common. To even be considered you have to fill an extremely specific niche that will make you stand out.

The GF has been sending out her resume for almost a year -- only had one interview so far. To top this off, NO one wants to pay you anything, while wanting everything under the sun as part of your experience.

For people who can't network or don't have the lengthy experience, finding a job is just really damn near impossible right now. It's upsetting.

Simply not an option for many people, and not reasonable regardless.

i'd be more interested in young americans unemployed between 21-25.

those who are 16-21 should be in school, otherwise it's no surprise they can't find a real job outside of retail/fast food
