Take a look at close to the last 10 years and the government is about the only net job producer out there. Private industry is close to being negative during that span right now. Ship the jobs overseas and the government is the one left to do the hiring.

I'll probably be on the unemployment line within the next 30 days.
:( I thought things were looking like picking up in the with your company, or at least hit bottom with cuts and paycuts?

anyone have luck recently?

I got a temp job applying to a fortune 500 company :) they advertised an open house for 3 weeks straight in at least two papers in my state (one county/regional), and they were mass hiring for a project regarding outsourced employee benefits. Because it's a project-based job, it's temp but it pays better than what I make in retail, so I'm not going to complain :p

If your definition of job is any position with a (reputable) company/business that offers compensation, even temporary, there's definitely jobs around. But ymmv (your mileage may vary) :)

The federal government is definitely hiring, although the positions open will vary by department and timing. In July, there was a nytimes article regarding veterans' affairs dealing with a backlog on veterans' claims. Not surprisingly a few days before and after the article, I noticed a number of veteran claims examiner positions open.....

The only other thing I will suggest is that sending out resumes and cover letters in and of itself doesn't constitute a good method of job-hunting. Are you networking, are you attending open houses or career fairs? Are you brushing up on your old skills and picking up new ones? If anyone hasn't already I highly recommend the classic "What Color is Your Parachute?" by Richard Bolles.

For all those who can't find a job right now, how many years of experience do you have? Are you just searching for any job or a specific field?

i told all my friends graduating to apply to all qualifying government positions from usajobs.gov before they graduated because the turn around is usually 3 months. One guy is interviewing with the GAO pretty soon

11+ in security, 7ish in IT, less in everything else (with some overlap periods in there). After a year+ unemployed fields lose all meaning...one job is just as good as another.

I thought so too but GM and Honda pulled business. GM did to get the lowest bidder, which is something they do in mid cycle often now. Honda did because they thought we were not economically viable to survive. That has resulted in layoffs in our production plants and the likely closure of up to 2 of them.

As for my plant, our management has decided to standardize tooling worldwide so they are getting tooling from Germany now. It is simpler machinery and costs 2X as much. We could easily build it for 40% of the costs with more safety features, but management doesn't want to hear it. We are down to the last 2 projects with 3 builders on the floor (out of 34). They will be laid off in the next 3 weeks if nothing changes. I can probably go on the road for a little while but I have missed so much of my kids lives by staying on the road and working crazy hours. I might just take the severance and go on. Hell, I just want to know one way or another what they are planning to do....no communication at all.

:(

17 years in industrial automation, which is pretty much what I'm looking for. A few jobs are opening up, including about 10 positions at the new Richmond, KY chemical weapons destruction plant (government funded which is usually good).

Healthcare isnt so hot either (at least in CA). Most hospitals are in hiring freezes and many of our graduating doctors cant find jobs and are going for more training.

Guess how many calls I've had for an interview.. 0 (that is ZERO).

What happened to the time when you turned in 3 applications.. and then got 3 phone calls within a week? *sigh*

I've extended my unemployment twice now and only have 6 weeks left.

Just lost my gf of 4 years.. and my car is about to fail. Need to go to dentist and doctors.. no insurance.

Good times.. good times.

I've been unemployed for 9 months as well, been turning in applications left and right, no response from anyone. The only places i've heard from are job recruiting companies that are looking for people for their clients. Just asking me if it ok to submit my resume to their client. It becomes so frustrating after awhile.

CA healthcare = heavily dependent on gov't dole and CA is on brink of bankruptcy

All three hospitals in my area have hiring freezes too with a few exceptions in hard to fill positions. Nursing isn't one of those. They are actually sending nurses home.

The demand throughout the rest of the country should be enough to lure them elsewhere, no?

Think about the attitude of your typical recent CA med school grad (think Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, USC, Berkeley, etc). I think it may answer your question.

depends on the industry. If you are in enviromental engineer, you are gonna find a job. My firm cannot find anybody and my group has been looking for an Electrical Engineer for 2 years.

Started looking a couple of weeks ago and already got an offer but more than likely will turn it down.

Timing, location, industry, experience and who you know all play factors.
