the 5.5 is just a suiscide shot before its able to heat up to furnace levels, its not like its stable anywhere near that speed on air. You'd have to pump in way more volts, and no way air could keep it cool then. Also note it was at 0C ambient, wich is 25C less then room temperature. So if you want to play computer games in a meat freezer then it might work at 5G. Not saying its not a good overclocker, but it aint that good :p

proccesor doesn't even matter on games once you pass speeds of ~2.4ghz (assuming extreme resolutions) or in intels case that's prob equal to 4ghz pentium.

LOL, some "air". But I have seen a 5ghz presler stable in a hot stuffy auditorium, air cooled, so 5.5ghz on naturally chilled air is not so outrageous.

edit: I remember back in the day when they thought 6ghz on exotic cooling was fast...

They've had 4GHZ+ A64s. nothing special

dumbest amd fanboy comment i've read all year.

Link us to just 1 amd overclocked to 3ghz on air that is priced under $500

The thread should read "Intel may have gained back the top possible clockspeed crown"...
There's nothing about performance anywhere in there.
BTW, I don't think they have ever lost that crown...

They lost the crown alright. But if you compare yonah's oc performance number compared to any amd x2's........its basically a massacre. Just wait for cornroe. am2 isn't gonna be much of a performance gain. So this is just a year of complete domination for intel. But i think next year amd will have something to show.

Link?

I really have to see this considering clock for clock a X2 beats Yonah in majority of apps according to anands benchmarks which featured two articles on this subject.. So unless yonahs are clocking sky high like 3.3Ghz I just don't see it happening.

BTW AMD has dominated this year already.. Has for the past 6 years excluding 8 months Pentium C's were competing with "old" A-XP's because A64 was late.

No one ever said they didnt. What i said was they aren't going to be coming out with anything new this year. And they will lose the performance crown
THIS YEAR.

and please disregard the clock speed, look at the spi time. And tell me can your chip do that at the same clock speed.

Superpi is a rediculous performance barometer. Try here
http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2648

You'll basically see A64 and yonah are pretty evenly matched in real world clock for clock. And since X2s are clocking 3.0Ghz these days I seriously doubt intel will be massacring anyone unless they hit 3.3 or better. Intel has said they will release such a chip in conroe EE...but I don't see it in Yonah at all.

i See, no one can read here. I SAID CORNROE. And i brough up yonah because it gives us a preview of whats to come. So yes its pretty obvious. There WILL be a massacre later this year. And it will be Mr. Cornroe doing the killing. Hell im trying to sell my 940 presler right now because i just bought an fx60. I know whos the champ right NOW. But i also know who will be the champ by the time xmen 3 comes out.

If amd wasn't behind in terms of 65nm and ddr2 i'd call it a tko in thier behalf. But come one i'm losing money for buying a $1000 chip especially since i'd have to buy all new ram later on. Which is why im selling my presler and keeping my ddr2 and when cornroe comes ill buy that. Now on the mobile front i really want to see what amd does since i thought the turion's were had some potential.Yonah was sort of a disapointment since it doesnt support 64bit and vista is due out this year. It makes the yonah's life shorter than danny devito.

so called 'experts' can never like mainstream stuff, just the way their heads work. Go into a bookstore and ask the clerk what their favourite book is and it will be something you've never heard of, ask a movie buff what their favourite film is and it was probably some obscure film. Ask a computer enthusiest what he best processor is and thye have to say AMD, otherwise all the people mentioned above are just agreeing the ordinary joes and their 'expert' opinions arent any differnet then anyone elses.

Obviously thats an exageration, but the point is still there, people wh oconsider themselves in hte know are likely to choose a nonestablishment canidate in order to differentiate themsleves from the pack. Of course AMD really is better for alot of stuff, but that don't mean Intel don't do some stuff right too. Anyways, waht were looking at in the cedar mill is a chip that costs Intel jack sh|t (65nm means die size so small), and that overclocks very well. So AMDs processors may be better, but you can bet Intel is raking in the $$$ producing processors at smaller process nodes. At any point Intel can drop the bottom out of its pricing and send AMD to the grave, of course if it does then Intel will get broken up by the monopoly laws, but hte fact of the matter is that AMD exists because Intel isn't allowed to kill it, not because its processors pwn Intels. Not sure what that has to do with the origional topic, but its late and im procrastinating so i might as well rant/ramble...

Yup...we have a prophet who says that God told him the CORNROE (or maybe he meant Conroe?) will devastate all of AMD for eternity...Praise the Lord that we have him to show us the way! ;)
