PC Gaming is starting to get kind of lame. Don't get me wrong, its my platform of choice...but its been neglected to the point its a shadow of its former self. I've lost interest in the upgrade arms race when I realized that there just wasn't much coming out anymore that made it worth buying expensive video cards.

The late 90s and early 2000s saw the end of the golden era. There were tons of awesome quirky titles coming out and I couldn't keep up with them. It was hard to fit stuff into genres, and the communities were often pretty tightly knit.

The PCs main problem is that there aren't any actual PC games to play on it these days. There's just a bunch of half assed ports. Games that could be great (DeusEx 2) end up getting watered down to 'fit' into the console mold. Even Oblivion had an insultingly crap interface for the PC. Gigantic icons, clumsy keyboard support and sloppy limitations on hotkeys left the entire interface hobbled by constraints the PC didn't have. The OP is quite correct...WTF should he run on the PC treadmill just to play console games on his PC? If the developers won't even take the extra time to give a PC game a PC interface, then why should we bother?

And I hear people saying microsoft is coming to our rescue with "games for windows"! Oh boy, Microsoft is here to make your expensive PC even more like your cheaper console. Do you really think that seal of approval is going to make all the bugs go away? Do you really think old microsoft is gonna solve all those crashing problems that the PC has had since the dawn of time by porting old xbox live to the PC? All it will probably do is raise the burden of entry for PC games developers. Again...why should I even bother? You think Microsoft is going to start coming out with a PC exclusives that might hurt the sales of their precious console? The interesting thing about Microsoft and their console is that they're sort of eating their own. The console is pretty great. So great that tons of PC gamers, who were tied to windows, are dumping their PC gaming all together. And how many people stay with windows over linux for just the games?

For my part, I might get a Wii next year when some games come out that allow it to really stretch its legs...and I'll watch the mod scene for some interesting stuff. Bioshock looks pretty cool, but I'm not going to spend another $300 on a video card just to play one game that probably will end up treating my platform like its least favorite child.

one problem i just thought of... we've had all these games forever. the fps as a mass market game has been here since doom1. that's a long time in which we've had millions of FPSes, but consoles had like 3. i just thought of that when i was considering how the fps hasn't been very interesting lately.

I'm not updating my PC again just to be out of date in a few months when I could just buy a X360 and/or PS3 along with my Wii. Even though the PC has so many mods and such, I'm tired of cookie-cutter FPS's and RTS after RTS after RTS. Its almost like the sad story of the PS2 in the later days; full of cookie-cutter linear Japanese RPG's.

Sad story of the PS2? PS2 has one of the best gaming lineups of 2006. Just look at it's games of the year, far better caliber than any system. Including such gems as Guitar Hero 2 and Okami. Sometimes I wonder where you guys get your information.

Thanks, the thread was turning into "PC GAMING IS DEAD!" hysteria, I figured the gauntlet had to be thrown.

PC Gaming wont ever be dead, but I do think more share of the gaming market will continue to the console side.

I really got tired of having to spend hours messing with my UI, mods, patches, updating hardware, troubleshooting why something wasnt working, etc for PC games. With my consoles, I stick the disk in, hit play, and Im ready!

Once the PS3 starts getting some games with KB/M support, Ill sure be a lot happier ;) I dont think many people will complain about having the accuracy and tons of buttons like a PC, but with the simplicity and ease of use of a console :)

You are tired of messing with mods? Most people consider those a benefit of owning a PC. It's user made content with the soul purpose of extending and adding to an already purchased product.

Oh and console gamers get the joy of patches as well.

But I recognize some of the sentiment, it is easier to play a game on a console, I just don't consider that enough reason to miss out on games you simply won't get to play on that console. That is really the soul of the decision.

do you think they'll ever concede to using keyboard/mouse? in a way, that essentially says "this is nothing more than a PC" since most people associate keyboard/mouse with a regular computer, not a console. also, it would say that keyboard/mouse is better than controllers *cough* for fps *cough cough* ;)

I stayed on the PC for FPS. I love them. 2006 was a horrible year for shooters. How many listed there are going to suck. Remember gamespot was excited about Ubersoldier and that sucked. There's lots of lost potential in these games, all we can do is hope. I think a year of no good FPS is reason enough to consider it the PC dead for FPS. And if you don't think Crysis is going to be on consoles after a while, you must be crazy.

I couldn't care less about mods. They are buggy and only sometimes they are good. I like to play the game as it was purchased. That's what I bought; that's what I want to play.

Console game have more recently enjoyed patches and I think as consoles get more integrated with online, it will come to a point like the PC. And I will not tolerate it. Even with the XBOX, lord of the rings: fellowship of the ring had a bug that stopped the game and I wasn't able to return the game. Damn Venvidi. Damn them to hell.

Yea I have no way of knowing if all those games are going to be good. But at the very least it tells me "don't sell my damn pc". Of course I'm not forced into the position where I have to choose either or so that helps.

Also, from your second post, mods are only sometimes good? Morrowind was nothing without mods, Counter-Strike is the biggest FPS multiplayer gaming environment and it is a mod. Team Fortress was a mod. Portal! is a mod with a retail finish. 2 of Valves best guys were originally mod developers. I don't think you've thought this through very much.

I was speaking in ratio terms. How many mods are released VS how many mods are good.

How many games are released vs. how many good games are released?

I think the serious mod teams have a better hit ratio than the game makers. Major mods are usually only made for good games to begin with.

Lets add in the cost ratio also. Bad mods cost you nothing.

Having fun with people over playing on your couch in front of the big screen is more than enough reason to switch. I can't imagine huddling around a tiny computer monitor, giving everyone mismatched gamepads. Lame.

100% ... for every decent game there is at least one excellent mod made.

usually

many time they surpass or at least equal the game

for Oblivion [for one example] there are many dozens of very good mods - long before the first "official" x-pack

Mods are great and all, and with games like WoW, I didnt have nearly as much fun as I did when I used them. But mostly mods are used to keep that edge, or add a dimension to the game that the devs left out.

Every patch they are broken.

Not to mention (except for a recent infection of windows) I get the ability to run Linux and not miss out on my gaming fix. I dont want something that is time consuming other than actually playing the game.

And yes, they most certainly would/should use kb/m for consoles. They are more accurate and almost everyone can point and click. I cant use a stupid controller for FPS games. I may as well call the person I am trying to shoot and convince them to move to the left a little so I can hit them. ;)

My ideal "game" system is a psudo PC that has a web browser, plays console games and allows me to connect to my music and video. I would be able to play with a controller or a keyboard, too!

Basically, the PS3 comes close, but is lacking being able to connect to my media via the network, and no games support the keyboard that you can already connect and use ;)

there are mods like those made for WoW.. then there are the mods like CS or Natural Selection or The Specialists :)

OP, I'm with ya. My PC gaming is less and less every year. There are still some games the PC is king for, like Civilization. But overall I'm tired of the upgrade churn. I'm still using Windows 2000, I have no plans to move to XP and I guarantee I'll never install Vista. I don't know if the release versions of some new games require XP, but for example I downloaded the Company of Heroes demo and it wouldn't run on 2000 so they can kiss my ass, I'm not going to buy a game before I try it. When games start requiring Vista, it's game over for me. That's a few years off, but it is coming. At that point I switch to Linux completely for my PC for productivity, and I'll do my gaming on a console.

BoberFett, you can't be serious. So a new game won't work on an operating system that's almost seven years old and you're going to switch to consoles? Drank a little too much tonight?

I'm quitting consoles forever because Gears of War won't run on my Gameboy. Bleep this forced console obsolescence, at least an old PC has other uses. People still make shareware games that will run on PCs that are more than 10 years old. Who makes games for consoles that are over a decade old. You're being screwed by the console makers, and it's time to switch to the PC.

If you're going to attempt to insult me, do it with an analogy that makes sense. Gears of War on your Gameboy? You just sound like a moron. There's a difference between requiring faster hardware to run more demanding software and releasing a new OS with little more than cosmetic changes to line the pockets at Microsoft. There is nothing that XP does which couldn't have been done under Windows 2000. The only difference was that Microsoft wouldn't profit by further supporting an OS they've already sold. They want to make you fork out for a new OS every few years. That's their prerogative, just don't expect me to play along.

P.S. Go fsck yourself.

In addition, the Playstation 2 was released in 2000. There are still games being made for the PS2. I repeat, it's a seven year old console (the same age as Windows 2000) and is still getting new games. It probably will for a couple years too.

FIRST of all, you are on an OS that is barely better and not really much newer than 2K. :p
Microsoft released Windows 2000 in February 2000 .... XP in Oct 2001 ... same NT kernel ... lots more bloat for XP. ... as to "support" ... MS is STILL releasing patches for them both and i use ATI's latest XP drivers for Win2K without ANY penalty whatsoever.

secondly, there are no games [perhaps OTHER that by M$] that run on XP that will not run on 2k.

finally, there is ZERO reason for me to "upgrade" to XP from Win2K .... especially now ... when Vista will make them both obsolete ... at the same time.

ridiculous analogy

As I said, it might very well be that the retail version of CoH runs on 2K. As it stands though, I don't care. I downloaded the demo, it didn't work on my system, and I generally don't go out of my way to give companies my money.
