WAIT WAIT WAIT, apple is gonna introduce new powermac models in 2 months (maybe even g5) and the prices will go down. I' planning on buying one as soon as the prices drop.

<< Suggestion: Instead of spending $2500 on a G4 Mac, build a decent, inexpensive AMD system for $1000 and buy an Apple iBook for $1500.

Best of both worlds!
>>

Yeah I'm with this guy. The new iBook's are slick and would serve very well as a laptop. You never play games on laptop's, do ya? Then get yourself one of those fantastic iPod's and your set!

Then, like he said, get an AMD system for a desktop, load 2000 or XP.

<< or, even better build an athlon and buy a powerbook. 400$ more then ibook and more than worth it. >>

Only $400 more? Your talking about the Titanium mother's right? Those start at $2,300! The iBook's start at $1,200... that's a bit more then $400.

<< I get the impression that many people out there have never used neither MacOS nor OSX. They think one's bad and the other's good just because others say so. >>

No, for real.
MacOS = Crap. It's the "You don't need to know" OS. "Why does my Quark file no longer open?" "You don't need to know." Turns out the resource fork is corrupted. WTF do we need a resource fork for? Oh, and how many times does the whole thing crash per session? yeeeeah...
OS X = BSD with a pretty front end and some custom crap. When I get frustrated with trying to figure out how to do something through the GUI, I just bust out the command prompt and go to town. To get my MacOS systems browsable on my NT network, I have to buy a standalone software package. To do the same in OS X I simply download and install a Samba port for free.

If there was an OS X port for Intel, I'd seriously consider passing up Win2k for it (I dont' game a lot).

<< 2. macs are a lot more attractive than pc's >>

Uh, take your 2500 dollars, and get yourself some incredibly sexy custom made case to put on your desk. There, you just satisfied your weird fetish for appearance.

<< 1 word/phrase: OS X. *nix done right >>

One word: Clueless.

It's closer to BSD then anything. But if you need bsd, you run bsd. Not osx.

BSD = Berkely Software Distribution. It IS Unix.
If you need BSD, you run BSD. But should you run FreeBSD? NetBSD? OpenBSD? OS X?
You might well have said "If you need linux, you run linux. Not Redhat."

Ignore the haters. I've been doing comparisons and research on buying a mac; and have been extensively using my friend's G4 tower.

OSX is worth getting just for the interface alone. It's way more powerful than most people think. Once you experience the speed and stability of the new macs you'll see why they're so hyped. Screw the XP 1800+ crap; pure numbers mean nothing anymore. Needless to say, I'm saving up for a mac myself. Only question is, have the coolest thing ever on my desk (imac) or retain the ability to have multiple monitors (G4 quicksilver). Hmmm. :)

Macs are great you will like it a lot. What kind of user are you? pro? consumer?

I really like all of apples iApps like iTools, iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto,...
OS X is really pretty nice. imho, you will never want to deal with windows again.

Don't worry about the fact that macs cost a little more. Most macs have pretty high resale values.

My recommendations:

iMac 800 with Superdrive
iPod
digital video camera
still digital camera

I run BSD son, I know what it is. I did not feel the need to point out the different releases of BSD. My statement was very generic. Should I round it down and say, if you want to run a webserver, run fbsd 4.4stabe with apache 1.3.22. If you want a secure install, choose obsd. So you pointing that out was useless.
My comparison was OSX to BSD. OSX != BSD.

*nix refers to linux, usually not BSD. Although it could be included in that all encompassing term.
Excuse my minor mishap. I was pointing out that OSX is not "*nix" done right.

I don't think it's that subjective....OS X is based on BSD...it's NOT BSD, but of course on that token one could argue that Solaris is not Unix....A matter of semantics--hardly gives you a right to call anyone clueless.

In my travels, I've seen *nix refer to any for of Unix, linux, etc.....hence my confusion.

<< I was pointing out that OSX is not "*nix" done right. >>

That's a valid statement. I think it's a pretty well-made distribution, but that's all a matter of opinion.

OMG!!! OH NO! AIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! NOOOOOO!O!OO!O!!!!

:D

So you were given the right to call me clueless? I see.

<< 1 word/phrase: OS X. *nix done right. >>

That gives me the right. And many enthusiasts would agree. :)

Sounded clueless to me claiming that OS X isn't BSD. More cluesless than someone who happens to like OS X and is willing to state such.

Enthusiasts, or fanboys? I feel a holy war coming on. No one's asking you to like OS X, just don't be a jerk to people who do. :)

Good for you!!

I have an old PowerMac running PPC-Linux but I am hoping to get one of those sweet I-Books sometime this year. Perhaps I will get an I-Pod aswell :) .
(probably when I cash in my airline stocks that I bought on the 17 of September at an all time low and already have made a neat 70% Profit :D )

Fanboys? I would say that mac users are the fanboys. And just about everything about macintosh points to that. The way its marketed, they way they license, they way the cases LOOK.

Nor was I being a jerk, its just the truth that hurts. :)
Comparing OSX to BSD in any form is a joke. Possibly you can compare them on the GUI end. But thats about it.

<< the HD is faster >>

??? You ever opened one up? It's just your standard UDMA 66/100/133 IDE drive. They don't use SCSI as a standard anymore. You have to get that special.

One more reason NOT to get a mac: SOFTWARE SELECTION SUXORS!
