If you look at most asian dishes, most things are never too large for you to pick up with chopsticks. The way asian cuisine is prepared is usually in small parts for you to pick at. vegetables, meats, etc... Obviously if you're eating a steak you're not going to use chopsticks to pick it up, but try eating fish with a fork.

I don't know about you, but Chopsticks are much better for eating than forks. I can eat individual grains of rice, not struggle to pick up peas, eat noodles without them slipping off my fork and do all kinds of neat stuff.

Yea, me too. Sounds like OPie doesnt know how to use chopsticks.

This sounds like one of those informercials where people struggle to use common household items to justify buying some gimmicky device.

You think it's hard to use a fork? Seriously?

Easier maybe if you have sticky rice. Requiring food to be prepared a certain way or cut up before hand and then saying chopsticks is better is absolutely ridiculous. I'm tired of the west's glamorization of Asian culture, from acupuncture to astrology. Enough with the orientalism already. Chopsticks a cool novelty but they're inferior.

I disagree. We need more glamorization of Asian culture in the West. To be specific, we need to promote the idea that the Asian man makes the best husband, boyfriend and lover. Who else is with me in this revolution?

I'll use em, and I can use them, but 99 times out of 100 they can be replaced with a tool that works a thousand times better

Huh?

Most people have the washable plastic chopsticks, so you can wash and reuse them.

And how the hell is using a disposable item better for the environment than a reusable item?

I'm sure a more intelligent person could make an argument that has merit, but your post was just senseless.

The only thing left is that people think they are special when they use them (i'm talking about white people who use them). I can understand if you are asian and you are just used to them, but there is NO reason for anyone else to use them.

It can't always be about efficiency.

I mean, why drink wine from an expensive crystal glass? Wouldn't it be more efficient to just show up to the fancy restaurant wearing one of those beer-helmets with drinking tubes? Then the waiter could just pour your port into the reservoir tank and you wouldn't even have to reach for a silly, non-efficient glass!

And they could run your steak through a pasta machine, so you could slurp it up!

As per Wikipedia:

Unlike other chopstick cultures, Koreans use a spoon for their rice and soup, and chopsticks for most other things at the table. (Traditionally, Korean spoons have a relatively flat, circular head with a straight handle, unlike Chinese or Japanese soup spoons.)

Looks like I thought half-right.

Chopsticks are idiotic, there's no way they work better or easier than using a fork and knife. There's probably a couple of billion people out there using them because that's what they learned to use (and tradition), but clearly they are inferior to a fork and knife combo.

"Real" Chinese food (i.e. not from places that serve "Sweet & sour chicken" or "General Tso's chicken") is often easier to eat with chopsticks. I like to use a spoon most of the time but when it comes to picking up long and thin pieces of food I use my backup pair of chopsticks.

Ignorance... you should never have to use a knife when eating chinese food

Helloooo, mcfly.. fork and knife work with *any* food, not just limited to a particular ethnic food. Like I said, chopsticks are inferior. They only work passably with certain types of food.

and those "billions" of people you refer to eat chinese food almost every day. Why should they switch to utensils that are not optimized for their everyday food? Without having an intimate knowledge of what chinese people eat you are in no place to criticize their choice of utensils.

There is merit to drinking from different cups made from different materials. Different metals taste different and the way it contacts your lips is different, "texture, etc"

Minor differences but there is a difference..

Back to chopsticks though,, No difference really in Purpose,, Yet requires more effort to manipulate.

For those who wants my "Chinese Card", Well, You can't have it, because I'm a champion at that wet marbles game where one has to remove wet marbles from one cup to the next.

This is a serious topic, Chopsticks are by all means LESS user friendly. Yes I can manipulate my computer just fine given command prompt, But it is JUST BETTER to have icons, + 3 clicks.

I've tried for 20 years to use chopsticks, it never stuck. I still can't use them now and don't really care to learn. Fork and spoon for the win:).
