I still don't understand how some people get into college.

... Plus just the fact you speak so generally has me doubting things....Grammar is a little loose on a stream of consciousness type posting that most are usually doing on a forum such as these.

Haha. I was in econ the other day and the prof. was telling us about the course and how we would only use fifth grade math and sometimes eighth grade math. He then went on to tell us about graphs and the girl next to me was copying it all down. It was all I could do not to burst out laughing.
Prof. - "This is the x-axis and this is the y-axis."
Girl - **Writes down info.**

lol!

i love it when you see people on the first day of class franticly writing down everything the teacher says 🙂

haha yeah i also find that amusing. they stop after like 3 lectures lol.

well, I tutor math at my college and many of the people I get to tutor are in this "developmental math" program. Needless to say, the only things I tutor are algebra and basic arithmetic. But at least they want to learn and they go to seek for help. I feel very good helping these people and surprisingly many of these people want to go all the way to vector calculus even though they are just taking easy math and still struggling. I admire their determination and I hope to help them all the way to vector calculus. To me, as long as they want to learn and get an education there should be no judging. I have seen many people who even though they are young , they don't have determination, discipline and don't want an education... just my 2 cents.

Who needs algebra, calc and diff eq when you have a TI-89!

Oh wait, guess you wouldn't understand the answer then.

I love it when people punch a whole bunch of crap into their calculators, then have no clue why their results differ from the right answers due to input errors or misused functions on the calculator.

Him - "I am still confused."
Some girl - "I don't understand either."

haha, good stuff. yeah, that's proof that sucess has nothing to do with intelligence.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm in one of the top high schools in the country, and not to mention one of the richest counties (not that it matters). It pisses me off though that my counselors keep telling me that my B+ average with 4 APs and an honors class, 1460 SAT, and numerous other clubs to boot are not enough to even get me into a mid-tier college. What you guys have expressed is really an eye-opener for me. I guess that colleges really do focus a lot on affirmative action and daddy's money. The only problem is that it sucks for a white, middle-class guy like me trying to get ahead. I'm sad. 🙁

dude grades matter, but we were just trying to explain that high school is fairly easy and people that brag about doing extremely well need to have a taste of reality. the real stuff is in college. i knew people in high school that didnt even take any AP classes and got 4-5 on all the exams they signed up to take, which included calc physics and chemistry. if those are you scores, chill, you will get into college. that wasnt what we were driving at.

Most people are over qualified to do their jobs and it will only get worse. A pharmacy degree to make you someone who can count X number of pills to go in Sally S. pill container is an 8 year degree from Ohio State. 8 YEARS! Unless the guy behind the counter at CVS has an alchemy lab setup to distill penicillin for me he doesn't need to be in school for 8 years!

That's a stupid statement. You think that all pharmacists work in the supermarket? Only a very small percentage of them do, and they get paid well for counting pills all day. Yes, anyone could do it, but sometimes it doe require knowledge of what they learned in school.

LOL this is a hilarious statement only because it is so correct. my brother in the law argued with me the other day about not being ready for school and people shouldnt go if they arent responsible. i was like how can you even say that? the whole point of going to college is to get an education and to learn to be responsible for yourself. its like he was making fun of people who take biology and calling them dumb for not knowing it when they enter the class. it was so annoying that he couldnt understand why people go to college. he also made fun of my choice in colleges because i didnt go somewhere where i can readily drink, do drugs, and be extremely not into school. well excuse me

After you get to see the behind the scenes of American universities, you are not surprised by these things. The problem is, these people should have failed 3rd grade but they didn't. In the US, you can only fail if you just don't do anything. Any half-ass try is enough to make you go by. When in college, many professors simply don't know what to do with these people. A professor told me that last spring he had a class where the 'real' average was less than 3.0 (or 30%), and at the end he passed everybody, because simply, it was not the kids' fault: they never learned the basics to properly follow the class.

OTOH, there are people who are simply brillant and you really see the quality of their education.

Another point is that this happens everywhere. The diff is that is very easy to get admitted to college in the US, while other countries have a limited number of 'seats', and there's a process of selection. I had a (foreigner) PhD student (with two master degrees) who could not solve a triangle to compute distances and determine coordinates of a point.

why would private colleges turn down kids when they are getting insane amounts of tuition money from them, not to mention future money in alumni donations. I graduated 5 years ago and I think the tuition at my college has gone up over $5,000.

i saw the test, it was retard. 3rd grade level.

Like your grammar?

Why are you fools agreeing with him without knowing the whole problem? It is clear that the person who asked the question wanted to know where they got the number 10 from ?

They get in because they have good high school transcripts - because high school is a JOKE and any retarded monkey can get good grades there. Plus Universities are out to make money too - they'll take as many students as the school can support. If they're short on smart kids they'll take the ones with the fat wallets.

The dumbification of America.

Try my High School. Are you kidding?

And In some cases I can see where people might get confused, but that is not one of those cases. Basic Math is tought in pre school by counting gummy bears.

But, for myself, I've forgotten how to multiply fractions with different denominators but I can solve quadratic equations. Some of the older stuff doesn't stick to well when I don't practice it.

Try any high school. Now for the real question, are you smoking weed?

high school is a joke. as he said it (correctly might i add) any retarded monkey with half a brain can make straight As in high school. my school system was as hard as they come, but it was still high school. they cater to middle of the line, ignore the smart (except for those worthless gifted programs
rolleye.gif
) and shelter the stupid. you have got to be smoking a big, one of a kind joint if you think high school is worth crap. are you still in high school? that could be part of the problem...

i took all the advanced classes, and im not the brightest human to walk on the earth, but it certainly was not overly strenuous and i still found time to do various other activities besides school and graduate with a high GPA. you are either a) dramatic, b) dramatic, or c) dramatic. if you are so smart, answer that question right!
rolleye.gif
Well, you've just proven what a genius you are.
rolleye.gif

Just because your high school sucked, doesn't mean they ALL do. I worked very hard in High School, took all of the advanced courses, graduated 25 out of 450 with a "mediocre" B+ average, and got into a reasonably competitive university. Most of the students in my AP physics class (which was the most advanced course offered in the school at the time) went to the third-highest ranked engineering school in the country. We had several students get into Ivy League schools.

No one in my graduating class had straight "A's." No one.

By the way, your grammar = teh suck. I can readily believe that your High School was easy. Good for you, you've proven that you're as smart as "any retarded monkey with half a brain."

lol are you serious? so i dont punctuate and capitalize correctly on a forum...wow i must be a moron!
rolleye.gif
would a stupid monkey like myself make a 5 on AP calc, english and a 4 on chem? hmm probably not.

williamson county is in the top 10 richest counties in the US. my high school was there. not saying that makes is uber, but it was DEFINITELY top tier. so what that no one in your class had straight "a's." that is all relative. my sisters college professor gave her a C which was top of the class and she got a 20 on the final. wow, she is so stupid! ok, so the your friends went to the "third highest ranked engineering school." which school do you speak of? ohhhh several students got into ivy league schools! pfft, every good high school has a bunch of kids that get into really awesome schools like cal-tech, MIT, harvard, etc. hell, one of our football players went to harvard!

you are missing the point. high school is a joke. i got a 1440 on the SAT, a 32 on the ACT, and i did pretty well in all of my AP courses. i would hardly call myself a moron. im not albert einstein, and i never claimed i was. its funny though that a moron like me started college 3 hours from being a sophomore
rolleye.gif

Let's make this very simple:
1. You stated, "any retarded monkey with half a brain can make straight As in high school. "

2. You stated, "you have got to be smoking a big, one of a kind joint if you think high school is worth crap."

3. Based on points (1) and (2), I believe that you are arguing that every High School is worthlessly easy for education.

4. I argued that you are wrong. Some high schools are not so easy as to be worthless.

I presented the case for my High School as an example. I should also add that the students I mentioned that went to top-ranked universities did not do so on athletic scholarships. Our geeks were not athletes, and vice versa. 🙂 We did have one athlete go to Stanford and one athlete go to Northwestern. I was not one of the "in" crowd, and did not ever find out where our other star athletes ended up at.

I ended up going to Northwestern University, which, at the time, was ranked in the top 20 in the country (or the top 15, depending on who you asked). The other students I mentioned went to University of Illinois' engineering program (which was ranked 3rd in the country for engineering), and a smattering of Ivy League schools.

I presented this information to disprove point (2), by demonstrating that my High School had students who went on to selective colleges, which, although I did not explicitly state this, hopefully implies that some of us were somewhat bright and motivated. I also stated that no one had straight "A's" to disprove point (1). I admit that I failed to disprove that a retarded monkey could have gotten straight "A's" at my High School, since there wasn't one in attendance at the time.

By the way, coincidentally, I also scored a 1440 on the SAT and a 32 on the ACT. I did this before they "dumbed down" those tests in 1992 (or was it 1993?).

I should mention that I graduated from High School in 1987. It is certainly possible that in the intervening time, all schools have gone downhill dramatically. If you are significantly younger than me, then you could be correct about all high schools being too easy. That has certainly been the trend since I graduated.

As far as your writing skills are concerned, there is a difference between informal English and just plain bad English. You have demonstrated the latter. I can only blame your easy high school education for your ignorance and/or laziness.
