I still don't understand how some people get into college.

now i'm not a math snob or anything like that, but don't you take Algebra in the 8th grade?? i realize that was a community college. maybe they dropped out of high school and just got their GED. but i'm amazed at how big of an assumption it is to think everyone has at least taken Algebra 😕

just my observations.

High school has pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and algebra II, those are the required courses, some states dont even require Algebra II.

As for community college, there could be several reasons why they are taking basic algebra, or college algebra. You gave one, they got a GED, in which case THEY HAVE TO take intermediate, and then college algebra, even if they test out of college algebra. Another reason is, the people could be older, and its been 5+ years since their last math class, and they need to get back up to speed. Theres also people that arent stupid, they just never had a decent education due to circumstances, doesnt mean their stupid, anyone can learn algebra, most other math classes if they work on it enough.

You also have people that are good at certain subjects, and suck at others.

thats what I would think.

Who is Dumber scottyB...the people who ask the "silly" questions because they don't understand and want to learn, or the ones who do not ask a question when they don't understand?

You think that is bad and you are at an undergraduate level. When I was in Graduate School I was amazed at how stupid or rather clueless most of the people where. I remember once we were discussing critical path analysis and the entire class was stumped when the professor started assigning each leg the appropriate pecent equivalent. The problem read as ".....is 40%...yadayada" and the prof just wrote .40 on that leg. The class stopped him and everyone was asking how he got form 40% to .40.......I laughed to myself for days over that one, an entire Graduate level class brought to it's knees because they still didn't understand the concept of percentages.......AND MOST OF THESE PEOPLE WERE FROM IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS!!!!!!!!!

And In some cases I can see where people might get confused, but that is not one of those cases. Basic Math is tought in pre school by counting gummy bears.

But, for myself, I've forgotten how to multiply fractions with different denominators but I can solve quadratic equations. Some of the older stuff doesn't stick to well when I don't practice it.

Well, it's not like you have to take a test to get in. Most of the time you just have to pay your money.

Huh? They have the ACT, SAT, SAT IIs. Most of the time you have to take the tests & submit an application.

lots of schools dont require the scores, mine didnt. you coudl submit them anyway if you wanted to but it wasent required. My GF didnt submit hers, she wont actually tell me what they were, she also wont tell me what her LSAT score was, its a lil annoying

The problem is college admissions giving less emphasis to standardized test scores cause "they aren't fair". These days a black or hispanic kid from an inner city school and a top math level of Algebra can get in to a college that a white or asian kid who took Calculus barely got in to...

It seems like the predominate subject here is math. I had a very difficult time in HS with Algebra and did not attend college for another 20 years, it is odd but because of the different teaching techinque It was no problem. I finially finished up with a degree last year on my 69th birthday.

I find this ceaselessly entertaining. I know that's the way it REALLY is, but my high school guidance counsellors are making the entire thing out to be "OMG YOU HAVE A 4.0 AND 1600 SAT. YOU WON'T GET IN TO ANY OF YOUR TOP 10 SCHOOLS"

Based or you quote it sounds like ou have a professor that sucks at english. Why would you answer where di you get the 10 from with how to find 7.

I was homeschooled, and had never taken Algebra before college. My mom isn't very bright at all and just bought text books for us to read. I went to school for computer science, and had to take Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, and Precalc just to get to where I should have been going in.

Try any high school. Now for the real question, are you smoking weed?

high school is a joke. as he said it (correctly might i add) any retarded monkey with half a brain can make straight As in high school. my school system was as hard as they come, but it was still high school. they cater to middle of the line, ignore the smart (except for those worthless gifted programs

) and shelter the stupid. you have got to be smoking a big, one of a kind joint if you think high school is worth crap. are you still in high school? that could be part of the problem...

i took all the advanced classes, and im not the brightest human to walk on the earth, but it certainly was not overly strenuous and i still found time to do various other activities besides school and graduate with a high GPA. you are either a) dramatic, b) dramatic, or c) dramatic. if you are so smart, answer that question right!

I myself just started classes after not being in school for 5 years. I am taking Intermediate Algebra right now which is the equivalent of 2nd year HS algebra. I chose this course because I havent taken math for 6 years and I wanted to make sure I didnt start up a class in which I wouldnt remember some of the stuff I should know. It is of course a breeze so far but I'd rather play safe than sorry. I doubt this is the case with the two people you are speaking of, but I think most people on this board should jump off their high horse once in awhile and not be so quick to judge other peoples perceived faults. Yeah I'm taking a HS algebra course, but I'd be willing to bet I am as intelligent as 90% of the people on here, not mention chock full of social skills that oh so many lack.

Just because your high school sucked, doesn't mean they ALL do. I worked very hard in High School, took all of the advanced courses, graduated 25 out of 450 with a "mediocre" B+ average, and got into a reasonably competitive university. Most of the students in my AP physics class (which was the most advanced course offered in the school at the time) went to the third-highest ranked engineering school in the country. We had several students get into Ivy League schools.

No one in my graduating class had straight "A's." No one.

By the way, your grammar = teh suck. I can readily believe that your High School was easy. Good for you, you've proven that you're as smart as "any retarded monkey with half a brain."

they've been having a program like that here in LA called TOPS (Tuition Opportunity for Students), except the requirements are MUCH lower (2.5 HS GPA, 20 on ACT, must keep 2.3 GPA at end of 1st year, 2.5 GPA the following years)... needless to say, too many people are getting free rides (full tuition, no room and board) and the program is running out of money 😕

That's one of my biggest pet peeves... we need to stop crippling the higher education system with a bunch of people who don't belong there. I absolutely hated classes that had more than zero students who didn't belong there... I hated when I was paying to learn, but wasn't because the teacher had to spend 1/2 of the time catering to morons who didn't belong in those classes.

On the other hand... it was a real pleasure to be in classes where the professor didn't cater to students without sufficient background... I'll never forget my Differential Equations class. 2 applied math/education majors, 14 or 15 engineering students. The course was taught conceptually, rather than "these are the exact steps to solve this..." The two of us had 100 averages... the next highest average was a C. He'd read the test grades in order after every test: "100, 100, 74, 72, 68, 62,... " and they generally went down from there.
I'd hate to think I'd ever drive across a bridge that one of those engineers designed. (not to knock engineers... more specifically, the "pre-engineering" students at my school.)

I am going to say high school is basic.

AP is not high school....at least in my high school you took those classes on the junior college campus. Totally different ballgame.

We also had honor's, now honors was a joke, same book, same teacher, just twice the homework. Homework doesn't help me....once I understand it, I want to move on, not do another 50 problems.

The gifted program was excellent that I was in....not all are equal and many are just the same class with the prerequisite that you have a 135-140IQ or better.

In the program I was in we built things, went to places to get hands on, and had a more advanced text book. Unfortunately in high school there was no gifted, and they made me start over in algebra, computer I, etc....so I wasted about 2 years of just rehashing what I already learned.

Same thing with 'advanced' courses....they can be anything the school says....you could make basic algebra, advanced algebra just by changing the name.

As far as tk149's comments go...what was the GPA of your Valdectorian? Plus just the fact you speak so generally has me doubting things....you can't mention the schools, esp the reasonably competitive....or was it just a mediocre school?

Grammar is a little loose on a stream of consciousness type posting that most are usually doing on a forum such as these.

lol are you serious? so i dont punctuate and capitalize correctly on a forum...wow i must be a moron!

would a stupid monkey like myself make a 5 on AP calc, english and a 4 on chem? hmm probably not.

williamson county is in the top 10 richest counties in the US. my high school was there. not saying that makes is uber, but it was DEFINITELY top tier. so what that no one in your class had straight "a's." that is all relative. my sisters college professor gave her a C which was top of the class and she got a 20 on the final. wow, she is so stupid! ok, so the your friends went to the "third highest ranked engineering school." which school do you speak of? ohhhh several students got into ivy league schools! pfft, every good high school has a bunch of kids that get into really awesome schools like cal-tech, MIT, harvard, etc. hell, one of our football players went to harvard!

you are missing the point. high school is a joke. i got a 1440 on the SAT, a 32 on the ACT, and i did pretty well in all of my AP courses. i would hardly call myself a moron. im not albert einstein, and i never claimed i was. its funny though that a moron like me started college 3 hours from being a sophomore
