I shoplifted today.

I used to shop lift a little when i was a kid, like 10. I would take demo discs from magazines and then moved onto whole computer games. Now i just look at it like eh, no real need for games, ill play it at a friends sooner or later.

For OP, if it really bothers you go back, if it doesnt then eh, life goes on.

But people do that all the time. I remember when they gave out Listerine strips with Listerine and half of the bottles at Costco were missing the strips =/ If you stole the magazines I would be more concerned. Too many people rip out those demo discs or whatever.

I mean probably 50% of people shoplift on PURPOSE every year, so doing it one time in you life by accident is no biggie if it makes you feal better, I've probably shoplifted things in the less than $5 100 times in my life and don't have any problems sleeping at night got it, so neither should you.

You're a petty thief.

I agree completely.

Oh like neither of you ever snuck a candy bar out it you pocket as a kid or anything like that? Even if you never shoplifted I'm sure you've probably downloaded 100+ items illegally, that ain't any better in the eyes of the law and if its different in your own eyes its just you kidding yourself. As for shoplifting, like here in college we have a stupid meal plan where you only get so much food and pretty much everyone tries to sneak food out, or steals silverware for their own use etc... and this is at one of the 10 most expensive school in the nation where people have no real need to steal, if ya'll can really say you never done anything like this than i salute you for your effort, you are a better man than I.

Rationalize much? And no, I didn't steal candy bars as a kid.

I would never think of putting something in my pocket in a store, fearing that they have some camera on me.

Next time you see some charity thing, donate $5.

Oh, I love cheese!

Yeah my dad taught (and enforced very strictly) that you simple don't put your hands in your pockets while in a store.

Don't go, you only will be worse off.

How so? Wouldn't the store have to prove intent to steal? By attempting to return it mjuszczak would acknowledge that the whole affair was an accident and that he had no original intent to steal it, as long as he had no prior record and this was done within a reasonable time frame.

I have walked out with items, just bring it back in and let them know.

*edit*: IF they have surveilance cameras chances are they will not realize the theft until later. If they come after you later on your 'It was an accident' excuse will hold no water.

Do the right thing...

Most of the items I have walked out with have been similar to ones I brought in to match up. I can't remember the item but once I walked out with something that was in the $100+ range (I am thinking compact flash, possibilly an application program)...I returned it and they immediately went back to their stock and verified the sensormatics. I needed to buy the item anyway so I did.

If it was from Wal-mart, no need to return it, no matter how much the item. If it is less than 10 bucks, keep it, but shop there again as a customer. If it is more than 10 bucks, sell it on e-bay to get more money.

What should I do?

putting poster in same category as zanejohnson, and soccerballtux.

Some of you folks are so silly it's amazing you can find your way back to this website.. I'll leave it at that without being mean and poking holes through the misguided moralities most of you seem to have because you never worked in retail and seen things like this on a daily basis, dealing with managers who have to make decisions on how to handle shoplifting and so on.

I'll simply say this.. it's NOT as big a deal as you may think unless you *slight laugh* seriously have a moral dilemma about it, because I can tell you store managers for the most part don't give a flying fuck if you steal that $3 candy bar, or that $1 bottle of soda, it's the fuckers who take 20 boxes of Tylenol or 20 disposable razors that need to get in check with their morals and we need to look out for. What the OP accidentally did is so inconsequential and asinine to anyone but himself that I'm still laughing he even made a thread about what to do.

Once again we have to make a decision for you. Can't you figure out what to do on your own?

Interesting view on theft you have.

Dude, couldn't agree more. Though I am entertained by this thread.

So when you said you shoplifted 100x, you were referring to taking food from the school cafeteria, and the two or three times you grabbed a fork. Somehow, I'm having a hard time believing that. No one calls taking food from the cafeteria "shoplifting".

It sounds like you routinely steal from stores, but in order to feel better about yourself you want to justify it by saying other people download illegally. Sorry, man, there's no excuse for shoplifting. If you want to do it, that's on you. But don't try to make excuses for it or try to spin it into "Oh, I meant I took extra food from the school cafeteria."

😕😕😕

If you snuck it out "accidentally", I can't see why you can't sneak it back in. Take it back, pay for it, drop it off... or do a drive by. Whether you tell the cashier or manager doesn't matter unless you absolutely need the "oh, you're so honest" line.

Exactly...because others are doing something wrong doesn't make it ok.

To the other poster, I am sure the manager probably doesn't care about stealing some of the time...but they are more than likely a glorified minimum wage employee. I am sure the store owner would have a different thought about even a candy bar being stolen. You sound like you are rationalizing a lazy manager that is ok with stuff that flies under the radar, but is concerned about theft that would show their laziness and unattentiveness in the store.

STEALING IS STEALING!
