Return it. It is the right thing to do. Furthermore, the fact that you posted this shows you want to.

Step 1: walk up to a cash register.
Step 2: 'I had this in my pocket and forgot to pay for it.'
Step 3: Pay for it

It's not a difficult concept..

man its no big deal at all, if you REALLY have some moral problem with it then just sneak it back into the store put it where it was to begin with and nobody will ever know the difference.

I mean probably 50% of people shoplift on PURPOSE every year, so doing it one time in you life by accident is no biggie if it makes you feal better, I've probably shoplifted things in the less than $5 100 times in my life and don't have any problems sleeping at night got it, so neither should you.

You're a petty thief.

Yeah. tell us what it was.

Probably a TV

In his pocket

"Hey baby, is that a plasma screen in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

"Oh, this, no, it's an alternator-sized chunk of meat in my pocket"

Don't get that started again.... ;)

I remember walking out of the grocery store without paying. It was a mom and pop store and thus did not have all the fancy security usually seen in markets.

Didn't realize until I opened the fridge the next day...XD

I would never think of putting something in my pocket in a store, fearing that they have some camera on me.

Next time you see some charity thing, donate $5.

Oh, I love cheese!

Look around here on this topic, the store may be a dick and could even retain you suspecting in thefts you DIDN'T commit.
As they say...
No good deed goes unpunished.

And they'd proceed to get laughed at by the officer responding...

You don't know if by some wildluck ou will be seen on a recording.

Just return it.

Not really a moral issue...more of a "I don't want some stupid sh!t I did to blow up out of proportion cause of some quick-trigger-fingered muthafvking rentacop"

I put some Kiwi Shoe Wax in my back pocket a few months back and didn't notice until I got home.

I won't tell you what I did... :)

Oh like neither of you ever snuck a candy bar out it you pocket as a kid or anything like that? Even if you never shoplifted I'm sure you've probably downloaded 100+ items illegally, that ain't any better in the eyes of the law and if its different in your own eyes its just you kidding yourself. As for shoplifting, like here in college we have a stupid meal plan where you only get so much food and pretty much everyone tries to sneak food out, or steals silverware for their own use etc... and this is at one of the 10 most expensive school in the nation where people have no real need to steal, if ya'll can really say you never done anything like this than i salute you for your effort, you are a better man than I.

Outa curiosity what was the item?

I'd just go back to the store and pay for it or reverse shoplift it and leave it in the store if it's still in resalable condition. If not just go pay for it.

Dude, watch your back - isn't this how My Cousin Vinny started?

Go back tomorrow, tell them what happened, and pay for it. And don't be stupid in the future. ;) You pocket is not a good place to put items you intend to buy. Even if you intend to pay for them, it looks like you're shoplifting and you could probably get nailed for it.

I doubt the store met the legal requirements to get him charged with shop lifting, as they would have detained him in the store. The real issues seems to be the moral consequences rather than the legal ones.

In some states concealing the item is all that is needed to get arrested.

1. Minors ARE different in the yes of the law.
2. No. I never stole anything from a store wittingly as a child. At least, since I can remember. I can't speak for my toddler self, but I'm pretty sure my parents would have stopped me.
3. You're a petty thief and you *should* have trouble sleeping at night.

A while ago I did the grocery shopping (my wife usually does it while I'm at work) and as I was walking out to my car I realized that there was a lime in my cart that I forgot to pay for. I put it in my pocket, walked back into the store and went to a different line than I had been in before and paid for it.

Edit - Oh yea, don't put stuff in your pockets that you haven't paid for, thats just asking for trouble.
