I don't think it's a good idea to lose market share but your comments about Android taking away sales from the iPhone seems a little off when iPhone sales have actually increased. Now, I'm not saying that some who would have bought an iPhone hasn't bought an Android phone instead. I'm just saying that the people who promote doom and gloom for Apple because of the lost market shae percentage are not looking at all angles.

I do think that it was inevitable that Apple would lose share percentage as more and more people move from dumb phones to smart phones.

Really? False? Care to explain why or is it because you said so?

I think what he is saying is that it is not just because of increased number of smart phones that Apple's market share went down while their sales went up. He is saying, I think, that in addition to hte smart phone numbers going up, Android's cut of the pie went up as did their sales.

IMO the cell market is heading for a major crash. Verizon has had 5 major Android smartphone releases in less than a year and with each release they stop research on the last release. I am still waiting for froyo on my droid. I already rooted and installed it but other droids are still waiting. I am also waiting for my Behold 2 to get the 1.6 update even tho we were promised 2.x by now but no, support for the BH2 has completely dropped months ago. Even tho I hate apple douche products at least we only get 1 phone per year, oh, wait, att keeps coming out with a phone a week also......Really guys, the cell phone market needs to crash so we can get better, more stable products.

It's not going to matter when Gingerbread comes along and then you can bypass your carrier/manufacturer and just get updates directly from google.

Wat? Stock gingerbread isn't going to work with every single phone out there. Drivers still have to be provided by the manufacturers.

Plus, no one knows anything about Gingerbread right now other than speculation.

The Verizon iPhone will change things, but not entirely in the way Apple fans might expect.

Without carrier exclusivity, the iPhone becomes a commodity. Just another phone that neither carrier has the incentive to protect and push. Apple certainly isn't going to get anything like the "we get all the data money" deal from Verizon that they did from AT&T -- and AT&T won't be giving it to them any more either after Apple breaks exclusivity.

If sales go up and profits per unit go down... isn't that the strategy that all the fans were praising Apple for avoiding?

There will be an initial spike in iPhone sales, but going dual-carrier means the beginning of competition, not the end. Great for customers, less great for the companies. But that's something we should all like... right?

It's worth noting that the iPhone is available from multiple carriers in most of the rest of the world. Carrier exclusivity for the iPhone only exists in a handful of countries (including US and Canada).

While the carriers in other countries fight over pricing ("we'll give you a free iPhone 4 if you sign up for our '1500 min.' plan", and then "we'll give you an iPhone 4 for $50 with our 1000 min. plan" and so on), the phone itself basically costs the same without a contract, and the price at the Apple store is more or less the same (ignoring tax and currency differences). I believe Apple gets their money no matter what and it's the carriers eating the price differential and this belief is based on the fact that the pricing at all carriers more or less approaches the same price as you get to cheaper and cheaper plans.

Don't be mad because you are jealous of your "friend" and myself for being on verizon.

You edited your OP 8 hrs after your original post to add that bit about jailbreaking. Its OK, I'm sure you aren't as embarrassingly gullible as you seem online.

Hope they fix the reception problem before they put it on Verizon if they do. I was playing around with the phone today at the Apple store and its pretty cool but I tried holding it with my left hand and sure enough went from 3 bars to 0.
