Between my Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon for pay per view type stuff, UFC.TV for my fights, and a pair of old rabbit ears, I dropped my $230-ish cable for $80 16Mb Internet, $8 Netflix, $8 hulu, and most payperview movies for $3.99 ($1 less than I was paying before), for $100 ish a month. My old rabbit ears gives me the local news and games (2, 4, 7, and 11 for me, plus a few others, mostly Spanish and Thai) and don't regret it at all. Plus since everything is digital now, nearly everything is HD too, well at least 720p, but I can't tell the difference anyhow.

I never completely dropped but I went from 3 out at a time and streaming to just 2 out at a time, no streaming

I did the same, but recently added Bluray for a couple bucks more. My queue is over 100 discs long usually, and it takes around a year for something to get watched after I add it in. I usually have completely forgotten why I put the movie in my queue by that point and it makes for a nice surprise as I have no idea what I'm getting into.

Netflix really isn't the best for "new releases" when it comes to streaming. That said, I'm into a lot of cult films, foreign films, indie films, etc, and they almost all seem to be on instant.

For new releases I will usually go to RedBox and pay a buck.

I am still signed up just for streaming.
They may not have new releases, and they may not have even many older blockbusters, but they have an awesome selection of indie films and an even better selection of foreign films. To me, this is a fantastic value, since I watch several streamed movies every week, and many of them are HD.

I dumped Netflix when they tried to raise my rates by 60%. I rarely used streaming and was getting one BD at a time. I may go back someday, but I have over 1300 Dvds, HD-Dvds, and BDs, so I could spend a few years actually watching them before i bother to renew.

Still a streamer, great children's stuff on there, TV series and documentaries for dad.

People on this forum love to hate on Netflix, but they're still the best streaming service out there. I'm realizing what a waste cable is...I have access to whatever is on now, which is usually nothing good, and most of the channels are just filler. Or, I could stream any episode from hundreds of tv shows at any time with Netflix. Buy two on demand movies a month and you've just spent as much as a Netflix subscription.

I had a subscription, was going to be gone for a couple of months so i though i would cancel the subscription thinking i would still have access for the rest of the month that i payed for, nope....

/purchased on April 4th, noticed the charge, went to cancel on April 6th then no more access for the rest of the month, thought i would still have access until end of April...
//only $8 but still wtf

It's a great deal compared to cable. I have discs + streaming and canceled my Comcast. If I really "need" to watch something sooner I can always buy the episodes from Amazon or iTunes.

I get them on my old rabbit ears and the local over the air broadcasts, just can't DVR them and watch later. But at least now I don't have to avoid any media that might slip on who won a particular game.

You would be surprised on the clarity of the HD channels with a pair of 9.99 rabbit ears. And even more ghetto, my upstairs TV is a peice of 14 gauge copper wire sticking into the screw-on female receptacle that is then wrapped around the hook of a coat hanger and then taped to the back of the tv. I plan on upgrading it eventually with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Jh3M931WUU&feature=related, which I believe was featured in a DIY in Popular Mechanics a few months back.

The wife and I dropped digital/HD cable (our apartment complex provides basic cable, including the local channels in HD for free) and signed up for Netflix/Hulu+.

Watching the first season of Downton Abbey on netflix was well worth the cost of netflix for a few months.

I dumped netflix when they raised their prices, haven't looked back since. It was a good chance to decide to do less tv watching and more outside stuff.

I need to try this. I live pretty far out from DC so I don't have much hope in rabbit ears working very well. Thanks!

It's pretty simple when you think about it. Netflix + Hulu + Amazon prime has more TV available than anything from Fios, Comcast, Cox, etc., for significantly cheaper. I don't expect this to last long. :\

Exactly correct. I canceled my cable and haven't looked back, actually haven't even had the chance to sign up for hulu+ and Amazon since Netflix has so much crap I want to see. The TV and documentaries is exceptional, selection wise. If I want to watch something new I'll just redbox or rent/buy it on VUDU.

You'd be shocked how much free time you have by not surfing shitty cable and watching their shitty commercials. For most major sporting events, ESPN3 will have it on streaming.

I need to learn how to do the rabbit ears though. :)

It will, though. The cable guys built their business model on the basis of being monopoly providers with gatekeeper control over the network. Those days are gone, thank God.
