Actaully, under Reagan AIDS recieved far more funding than cancer research (nearly 6 billion dollars). So while he publically ignored it for political reasons the first few years, he did fund it.

Amazing considering the fact that by that time AIDS had killed only 6000 people while cancer had killed tens of thousands each year.

Simply put, it was a lessor of two evils situation. The only alternative was US occupations to stop the communist expansion into the Americas.

The Contras were mercenary thugs, rapists, and murderers, and nothing more (unless you want to throw drug trafficing in there , but that isn't much of a sin compared to their other activities). Your list of alternatives is rather uninspired. You left out self-determination for the people of Nicaragua.

Again, the Sandinistas were every bit as brutal and corrupt as the Contras. So brutality is irrelevant. So is self determination when those people are choosing to align themselves with the most oppressive and evil empire in modern history.

the simple fact was he ignored it until it until he couldn't. and then he didn't react rationally. just contrast the reaction of the also conservative thatcher government to aids with the passing out of clean needles and other preventative measures to keep the spread in check. and only 6k dead? thats just the part of the iceberg you can see.

Interest rates peaked in 1980 and steadily fell after Reagan took office in 1981 with a few minor upticks along the way.

By the end of his first term, they were cut to less than half.

I thought he had a great personality and lots of charisma altho I agree with BoomerD.

Beyond that he taught us that significant economic development and expansion can be achieved 3 ways - debt, more debt, and a sh!tload of more debt - while at the same time teaching us that its not important to worry about who pays off the accumulated debt, muchless its rapidly accruing interest.
