I start on Chantix tomorrow. After 20 years it's time. I did quit for four months a couple of years ago. Doesn't sound like much but when you have smoked for a long time it's an eternity.

OP, did you quit cold turkey?

The Chantix will work. Be prepared for some real funky dreams when you sleep though.

Sort of... I had quit briefly a few times before with nicotine gum. I never made it completely off the gum, though.

On my last attempt, I bought more gum and Quest brand nicotine free smokes. My plan was to smoke the Quests when I'd normally smoke, but only chew the gum when I had a rough time.

I found that smoking the Quests was good enough, and I never touched the gum. After a week, I lost the desire to smoke the Quests any more, so I stopped. (The Quests taste TERRIBLE! If you're going to try them, get the menthol, if you hate menthol. The regulars are unbearable)

The biggest help was using Listerine PocketTabs or a Binaca-type spray when I had a craving. That REALLY worked well for me, and I was minty fresh! I HIGHLY recommend trying this! It appears I didn't need to smoke, I just needed some mouth damage. :)

Years ago, they gave me Wellbutrin, and it had that effect. It was actually quite cool. All of my dreams were action packed from start to finish!

Chantix gave me the funky dreams too. I'm gonna try an e-cig to cut down and eventually stop. I think I need the habit more than the nicotine, but with this I get both w/o the smell, tar, etc.

i havent smoked for over 2 weeks now...are you coughing at all?
everytime i quit or stopped...i start to cough alot...

That's your lungs giving the tar and other crap we inhale the boot. Lasts a couple weeks or so but after you get through it you can breathe about 10x deeper.

A few years ago, I was a 2 pack a day smoker. I quit for about 6 months. Then I thought I could handle social smoking, and slowly grew to half a pack a day again... Argh!

I finally got my first chest cold in years, and stopped smoking again. Most of my smoking buddies have quit, so the timing couldn't have been better.

I just had my first child (Juliette) and I have been trying to cut back/quit since she had been born.

But, I have to admit, I'm glad I got this cold. It gave me the chance to break away!

Edit: Oh yeah, I'm 5 days clean right now... So, I'm over the worst of it...

that's great, proud of you!

Congrats! I quit about 4 weeks ago. I miss it as I enjoyed it and it was a pretty good crutch when I got stressed. I don't know if it's permanent but I guess any time spent not smoking is good. Good luck!

Wow, I'm so glad that I've never put a cigarette in my lips.

edit: which is funny, I've smoked pot, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect as cigarette's do.

Nothing funny about that. Nicotine and THC (and other canabinoids in pot) act on totally different receptors. Nicotine is extremely physically habit forming. THC is not.

<---- never smoked either yet.

Yeah. That's what I used before when I quit. I do remember the dreams about demons, snakes, large spiders, etc. Even though the dreams were a little weird it felt good because I rarely dream in the first place.

Thats great that you quit smoking, now you just need to get ready to start dieting

Funny you mention that. I'm 6'2" and a big built guy. I probably weighed about 260 when I quit. I lost a bit after I quit, and I was surprised. Then the WoW bug hit me hard, and scales once said 299. Then I knew I had to do something....

I found this crazy weight loss system called "Eat less and exercise" and now weigh 253.

I still need to add "Eat RIGHT", but that's expensive and a PITA. (for now) As soon as I do that, I'll lose more.

In fact, I was just getting ready to jump on the treadmill right now...

You're probably right.. But I won't go without a fight!

A guy I work with quit smoking cigarettes and now he uses these flavored electric cigarettes that plug into a USB port (if I recall correctly). They supply nicotine but give no smell from what I can tell. He does not smoke regular cigarettes anymore.

That's too bad. The point of quitting smoking is getting off the nicotine and breaking yourself from the habit of smoking and replacing it with something healthy and productive.
