I pumped gas last night.

Nothing more retarded than forcing jobs and awkward social interactions that have expected tips. So glad I don't live somewhere as retarded as NJ.

What on earth is this law supposed to prevent anyway?

What do you do if you're on a motorcycle? Step off the bike, open the fuel cap and watch an attendant pump 3 gallons of gas into your tank?

you got it, and then tip them for doing such an amazing job when they're done

Apparently no one in NJ minds having full-serve only, there are advantages time-wise. I can't count how many times I've waited while some moron is yapping on the phone after pumping his/her gas while others wait for a pump to come open. Sometimes they think it's a great spot to clean out all the trash in their vehicles again, while people are waiting.

and there are disadvantages, time-wise. if i pull into any gas station with an open spot, i can serve myself immediately. if i have to wait on a slow-ass attendant, i'm at his mercy.

one time i probably waited 5 minutes (or what felt it, at least) for the attendant to come over to my vehicle when there was only 1 other car in the whole goddamn station, and decided to give jersey's system the middle finger. pumped my own gas anyway. i figured with out of state plates i could plead ignorance once.

Like has already been mentioned, the law is there to protect the jobs.

In the case of motorcycles I would always let them pump their own gas. I had a few that came in Sat night. I gave them the nozzle once they unlocked their fuel tank. I didn't want a pissed off Harley guy yelling at me because I accidently put a few drops of gasoline on his precious paint job.

That's the same with expensive cars. If they insisted I would always let them pump their own gas.

Best part is when they come through the drive thru, order just 2 large cokes and say full of ice but only half way on the soda.

You can read why you're not allowed to pump gas in NJ here.

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/20...you_cant_pump_your_own_gas_in_new_jersey.html

Also, consider that NJ is having a terrible time producing jobs. If they were to end full serve that would mean the end of thousand of gas attendant jobs. These are only minimum wage jobs, but they are still jobs that NJ desperately needs.

I live in a resort area, so you can imagine how it's like 9 months out of the year. It's a nice place to live, but unless you work in government or own a business it's impossible to make a living. This is why many people end up leaving when they finish high school.

Lmao

not to mention the emotional toll taken as grown, functioning adults across the state struggle to learn a skill most motorists master by age 17.

That whole not being allowed to pump your own gas thing blew my mind when I visited my cousin in NJ.

Most just let you pump your own for a variety of reasons. I live in PA but I'm in NJ sometimes and even thoguh I avoid it I have to occasionally stop in NJ for gas (gas is even cheaper but I dislike people pumping for me). In fact I did it this past saturday coming back from the beach. The auto-stop apparently was broken on the pump and the guy managed to get about half a gallon of gas all over my car. Pissed me off big time.

I love my vehicles - hate having people pump my gas for that exact reason. Although this time it was not the attendants fault.

I live in Oregon, where we too aren't allowed to pump our own gas.

And I am just fine with that. :)
Been there multiple times. Love it.

I hate pumping gas. Smells, it's either cold or hot out. I miss full service stations. Don't know why people think it's a bad thing.

as much as I hate to admit it, reading that article, creating jobs @ minimal cost is a pretty decent reason.

Just think, if CA didn't allow us to pump our own gas, they could charge another $2 a gallon.

Introducing inefficiencies to create busy-work isn't a winning proposition in the long run.

New Jerky likes to make sure you don't rip off the middle east's oil so A-rabs can fly private 747's.
