1 GB Dual Channel DDR400 here. i know that's near obsolete for a desktop, but it's not bad for a year old laptop. 🙂

I have 256mb PC133 SDRAM in my desktop.

P3-700 o/c to 933@133.

cutting edge.

So sharp it burns.

Of course it SDRAM 🙁
All memory for contemporary PCs is SDRAM, unless you've got RDRAM. 🙂

OK FINE.

Both of my computers have a gig of NON DOUBLE DATA RATE SDRAM. 😛

2x256MB, and I bet my machine boots faster than yours 😀

It's all about optimization, this is what I sent in response to a PM about reducing XP's RAM usage:

"Sure, no problem. One of the first things you'll want to do is disable some unnecessary services. Look at this guide for info on that. One of the other things you want to do is right-click on My Computer, select Properties, and edit some setting there. Go to the Advanced tab, click on the performance settings button, go to advanced, and then change the page file size to 1024-2048MB (custom) or more depending on how much RAM you have. Click OK, then go to the remote tab, make sure nothing is checked (security risk and resource usage, FYI). Next, go to automatic updates, disable automatic updates. Then go to system restore and disable system restore unless you'd like to have it just in case (I don't use it, I make images of my hard disk occasionally). With disabling lots of services and not installing tons of useless crap, you should easily get to the sub 50MB mark on a fresh install of XP. I'd also update using Windows Update to everything critical besides SP2.

Hope that helps."

wtf..i only got 512 mb of ram and half life 2 loads in about 3 mins or could be less

EDIT: ok so i sat and timed it lol and it only took 2 mins to load

It's okay, I just sold a system with 4 f'ing gigs of RAM in it. I have a supplier of ultra-cheap 1gb RAM sticks, but they're kinda picky about their memory controller. Modern Intel chipsets don't work, AthlonXP-era AMD chipsets don't work (Though KT266A and earlier do), Socket 754 Athlon64's don't work, Socket 939 Athlon64's do. Don't even ask me about Intel compatability.

And the kicker? These things, which are CL2.5, cost me EXACTLY the same as a 512mb Corsair ValueSelect CL2.5 piece - so I can double my customer's RAM for "free" with the purchase of a high end system.

Doesn't work in any of MY systems, though. I hate selling stuff better than mine, but hey, what more do I need?

And yes, the stuff works. We bought 20 pieces and put them to work in a friend's datacenter for 6 months - unshakeable in practice, and unshakeable in memtest.
