Is it anything like FF? I'm in the break between summer and fall semester and thinking of picking one of the series up. Should I just go for the latest or is it not the best

I'd say that the games are not similar to FF, but Oblivion is the consensus best RPG to come out probably since neverwinter nights (which came out like 213423842384 years ago). I think almost every RPG'er on this forum would recommend it.
Edit: Including me, and I'm a big fan of the FF games.

Isn't Oblivion an MMO?

Ok sell me on Oblivion
After I hit High Warlord in WoW i'll pick up a copy, I'm reading reviews on Amazon and they seem to really enjoy it.

oblivion is fun for about 2 weeks and then you've pretty much done everything in the game and its the same old crap over and over. combat is repetitive, boring, and predictable.

oblivion is a blend of FPS and a RPG. its a lot of fun. But as pontifex said its prettye repetitive (but what game is not?). though i logged in over 150hours (finished the main quest) it is still one of the best RPG's i have played on the computer.
Not to say those are bad games. They're fun to play and provide lots of entertainment, but too many people who think they like RPG's (especially the console crowd) get pissed off because Elder Scrolls doesnt walk you straight to a cinematic boss fight and hand you an Excaliber sword afterwards.
Oblivion is a role-playing game, not an action game with stats.

i don't like the skill system of elders scrolls (played morrowind, and i think it's roughly the same for oblivion, yes?). for example, the skill "acrobatics" - you have to constantly jump around to raise your skill. while this makes absolutely perfect sense, it's incredibly annoying to me as a player.

You haven't finished it if you haven't done the Dark Brotherhood quest line![]()

but it allows you to "exploit" the game's mechanics.
if you want to level your "athletics" - for example - you set your Char in a safe corner and let him run all night while you sleep . . . or tape down the 'c' key to cast endless mini-spells . . . when you awake in the morning, your character is a level up. . . . and you can 'buy' 5 of your 10 points needed to raise a level by Training .
. . . and i can't really compare Morrowind to Oblivion as Oblivion is my first Fantasy RPG . . .
. . . not my last . . .
