Is it anything like FF? I'm in the break between summer and fall semester and thinking of picking one of the series up. Should I just go for the latest or is it not the best

I'd say that the games are not similar to FF, but Oblivion is the consensus best RPG to come out probably since neverwinter nights (which came out like 213423842384 years ago). I think almost every RPG'er on this forum would recommend it.

Edit: Including me, and I'm a big fan of the FF games.

It's nothing like Final Fantasy, that's a Japanese style 'linear' RPG where your character and story and the order in which you do things are set in stone before you start. Elder Scrolls are western style freeform RPGs where you can customize your character to be whoever you want, go where you want, do whatever you want. The advantage of the Jap games is that the story can be really epic, the dialog perfectly scripted for the situation, etc. The advantage of the western games is that you have full control, i.e, you can become the head of the mages guild, or a legendary vampire slayer, or if you want you can follow a character back to their house, hit them over the head, steal their keys, and rob their house. You can't do that in FF.

Isn't Oblivion an MMO?

oblivion is fun for about 2 weeks and then you've pretty much done everything in the game and its the same old crap over and over. combat is repetitive, boring, and predictable.

to answer some of the random questions on this thread:

Oblivion is a true RPG game. It isn't like FF because there are no "take turn" battles. Oblivion is a huge world where you can do anything, talk to anyone and take on quests etc. Its a great game to play for hours on end....

It isn't like Diablo II. If you want a game like D2, I highly recommend Titan Quest. I've been playing this game for 2 days now and its amazingly similiar. The game looks beautiful (I only have a AGP 6800) and the gameplay is exactly like D2.

If it wasn't for TitanQuest, I would still be playing Oblivion. Two great games if you won't be doing anything the entire summer and just gaming.

danny~!

Be sure to check out the mods available. There are also a few official plug-ins available for $2 each that add some more content. But the mods are where its at :)

I have to agree with DannyLove.

Seems to me very few folks actually know what a Role-playing game is.
I usually suggest folks go to their local hobby shop and ask if they can sit in on a session of Dungeons & Dragons, (or whatever they play locally).

When you finally learn what the lesson of role-playing versus roll-playing, you will see why Dungeon Siege and Diablo are not RPG's. They are action games with stats. Final Fantasy isnt much better.

Not to say those are bad games. They're fun to play and provide lots of entertainment, but too many people who think they like RPG's (especially the console crowd) get pissed off because Elder Scrolls doesnt walk you straight to a cinematic boss fight and hand you an Excaliber sword afterwards.

Oblivion is a role-playing game, not an action game with stats. Same for Baldurs Gate, Fallout.
Heck, even Deus Ex. There's a lot more role-playing going on in that game than Final Fantasy.

agreed. and too many arbitrary limitions, like very limited spell power when creating spells, what spells you can use in enchantment, etc... so what if some of the things may be "exploitive"? It's not like you're playing vs other people so you can get an unfair advantage... you're just playing against a computer...

daggerfall was the best and looks like will always stay the best as long as the team is more concerned with their spiffy graphics and physics engines rather than gameplay elements.

oblivion is a blend of FPS and a RPG. its a lot of fun. But as pontifex said its prettye repetitive (but what game is not?). though i logged in over 150hours (finished the main quest) it is still one of the best RPG's i have played on the computer.

more rpg . . . definitely . . . but the fighting is FPS. . . . with freedom to do what you want when you want and where you want.

. . . it is my FIRST fantasy RPG . . . and i have put 1016 hours into it
[at least 500 hundred of those thousand hours were spent "exploiting" the game's mechanics to level 40 levels beyond the "normal" level 50 or so] ;)

and i am finally *done* . . . *everything found*, *all skills & abilities* maxed, *Master of Everything*, all Guilds, 8 million in Gold, Level 92 - using no cheats!]

i'd recommend it!

:D

it's MY game of this Millenium . . .the best new game [period]
:thumbsup::thumbsup:

and i just uninstalled it . . .
:Q
{even though the 'vile' plugin has the BEST weapons and armour for Maxx} :p

. . . waiting for the x-pack.

and the people who say Oblivion is repetitive and boring don't have a clue . . . about RPG. ;)
. . . they must be the FPS people who love the extreme banality of Doom3.

[i used to be a FPSer. . . since Atari 800xl 'till Oblivion . . . over 20 years . . . no more] :p

Is Final Fantasy like Oblivion?

Let me put it this way...

My coffee machine is more Final Fantasy-like than Oblivion.

If you expect Oblivion to be even remotely similar to FF or Kingdom Hearts or something like that, you'll be sorely dissapointed.

Oblivion is Grand Theft Auto 3- set in a fantasy world, with more to do, RPG elements added in- and it doesn't suck. It is closer in implementation to GTA then it is to anything remotely current in the FF realm(although FF2 was actually very close in some respects).

Console RPGs != Final Fantasy. Most CRPGs are far less linear then what you find in the best known series for the very casual gamer. Most of them are far more open ended then FF- just as most PCRPGs are far more linear then Oblivion(which, consoles are now the main platform for the ES series). That said, Oblivion is more of an action game with stats then any traditional style RPG like DragonQuest. 'Real' RPGs are turn based and aren't nearly as open ended as Oblivion. This isn't a bad thing in any way, just pointing out the reality that in terms of actual gameplay Oblivion is closer to Zelda then to die based D&D. Actually, you can ask apoppin about how Oblivion compares to Morrowind. Morrowind was certainly far more hard core and much closer to old school D&D then Oblivion. I am a huge fan of both games for the record, just want people to know what they are looking at when they are trying to make a choice.

i don't like the skill system of elders scrolls (played morrowind, and i think it's roughly the same for oblivion, yes?). for example, the skill "acrobatics" - you have to constantly jump around to raise your skill. while this makes absolutely perfect sense, it's incredibly annoying to me as a player.

thats my favorite part of the series. for example with acrobatics if you wanted to raise it fast you could just pay to have it trained. otherwise almost every skill has a easy way to raise it- for example acrobatics- find a room with a pretty low ceiling and a table- get up on the table and try jumping. If your head almost immediately hits the ceiling you can mash the jump button and you'll be jumping so many times that you'll be raising the skill in no time. :D

but it allows you to "exploit" the game's mechanics. ;)

if you want to level your "athletics" - for example - you set your Char in a safe corner and let him run all night while you sleep . . . or tape down the 'c' key to cast endless mini-spells . . . when you awake in the morning, your character is a level up. . . . and you can 'buy' 5 of your 10 points needed to raise a level by Training . :)

. . . and i can't really compare Morrowind to Oblivion as Oblivion is my first Fantasy RPG . . . :p
. . . not my last . . .

EXACTLY!! This is what makes these kinds of games fun I think , where you can do this kind of stuff to make your character super powerful ,so you can go out and just whip everything. And go anywhere , anytime , and have no worries. That's fun. I mean isn't that what you think about when you just start a game like oblivion , and the little imps kill you...that you wish you were just mean enough to stand there and take it , until you decide to unleash your wrath? Apoppin did this game dirty!!
For the PS2 that is like on Final Fantasy 10 when I took EVERY character all the way around the skills "board" and got every single skill slot purchased for everyone....
then go whip the last boss with 1 or 2 hits....that's fun for me.
