I clear about $950/mo.

Is there anything I can do, outside of putting my money in savings, to help build interest more quickly? I need to have about $10,000 by next August (that's my target). Would a CD be appropriate?

I'm thinking about getting rid of my TV and possibly my internet connection. I was also considering taking a part time job to help out. If I could save $1000/mo, that would be awesome.

I have $500 left on my medical bill. Other than that, my bills are:

Rent- $150
Cable/Internet- $100
Phone- $20
Food- ~$200
Gas- $15

If I got rid of the cable/internet, I'd have about $565/mo that I could save. I work about 45 hours per week.

What would you do?

Your rent is only $150 a month!!! ...wow

200 bucks for one person is NOTHING. I don't buy steaks or lobster and my bill is easily over that.

i agree.

The area I live in is depressed. I have one roomate. Our total rent is $300/mo, fairly common around here.

$7.50/hr is pretty decent for where I live.

$10,000 is an ideal goal. I'm trying to be conservative with all of my calculations.

I second Skoorb's suggestion that you not screw yourself to death by buying an expensive car. Me and that Canandian ;) drive little old cars and save TONS of money. You know how much I pay in car payments? NOTHING. I bought my 1990 Subaru Justy for $2900 last year. You know how much I pay for car insurance? $20/month. And my car get 30.5 mpg.

You don't have to be as hardcore as me and Skoorb. Get yourself some 10 year old GMC pickup truck. They look nice, last a long time, and are very utilitarian. No one would suspect you're broke driving one of those.

you definately need a better job than that

you'd make more money @ups

cd's a pretty worthless, if you put in 10k into a CD on jan1, at best you'd have like 10750 by dec31 (or something like that, i don't wanna do the math)

for your needs it's not gonna do anything for you

your only real option is to get another job

I'm not sure on a $950/month net income you could possibly save $600 of that. Yes you can skimp here and there (ramen noodles make a great meal for 8 cents). But I think you'll turn your life into a horrible live. My suggestions:
1) Skimp where you can, but don't make yourself miserable,
2) A $3000 used Toyota will be just as reliable as almost any new car (I'd suggest a Honda but Honda's keep their value for so long you're usually better off with getting a Toyota if you are buying used). Anything more in your situation is a complete waste of money. Plus the savings on gas and usually insurance when you drive a Toyota should help out a lot.
3) If you are in college, do what the rest of us do: get a small education loan. You should be easilly able to get $5000-$10,000 per year interest free for as long as you are in college. If you honestly will finish college, and are going for a degree that will earn you a good job, then there is no harm in getting an educational loan. If you aren't going to finish college, or aren't going to get a degree that will earn you a good job - then don't start the college at this point in your life.

He drives a Festiva. :D I'd drive one.. especially if I was looking to really save on gas.

Why do you want to get a new car? Does your current car need some major repairs or something?

I disagree with those that say you cannot eat healthfully/well on $200/month for one person. We average $100/person per month and have for years. We eat well, and the food is nutritionally sound.

I don't think it can survive another trip to Southern Mississippi, plus years of driving around at college and down to visit my family and back.

How far away is the nearest large city?? I make almost twice what you currently make delivering pizza for <20 hours on the weekends... and I get all the free food I can eat! Look into it but you need to be in a large city to make any money at it.

5.25/hr is hardy a "sweet" position ... hell its not even "a position". Around here you can get ~7 just cleaning meijers or something

Im 19 and I make 12.50 an hour doing java coding and sysadmin stuff... my bills are massive ~550 for rent, 40 for phone, 100 for insurace. I can pretty much cover my rent on a monthly basis and the rest comes from savings

average is not the same as 1 actual person. the problem is that larger quantities of food are usually priced less/unit than the smaller "personal" sizes. Go to your local grocery store and checkout the price for a 1/2 pint of half & half versus a full pint. Unfortunately a lot of the larger portions are just too much for one person and the food ends up being gross long before it's finished.

Ahh.. What makes you think that? Does it smoke? How many miles? Manual, right? Does it just generally lack power or run sh!tty? Does it shift OK?

If it isn't obviously worn out(smoke), you could have a full diagnostic done on it, plus a tuneup. Have them check and document the compression for you(so you can come back here and run it by us:D).

You never know... buying a used car could be more trouble than it's worth.. I suggest if you do get a new car, to really do some research, and be patient. Don't just take the first thing you come across, that's what they want you to do. Grab the paper and any classified ad papers you have around your place early on the first day they come out. Keep an eye out for "nice 1 owner cars with all service records", and such things like that. Those can be the real deals. A new car with an unknown history could be a nightmare. Stay away from dealerships unless you want to be raped... I guess unless they're the ones advertising the 1 owner w/ all service records car. They do sometimes.

You never know, your little Festiva could be good for another 30 - 50k miles or more. :)
