I need to reboot my ceiling fan.

Lifer
I've got a Hampton Bay ceiling fan that spontaneously started running in
the wrong (winter) direction when I turned it on the other day to dry some
carpeting I had cleaned. From what I understand after talking with the
supplier (through Home Depot) is that it originally came with a wired remote
that had a button that reversed the motor, for summer/winter setting. I
guess the previous owner of the house installed it with a Hampton Bay
wireless remote rather than running a wire to a wall switch. I also assume
that some sort of voltage spike/gremlin caused the internal brain of the fan
to go into winter setting. The tech guy said to try to force the blades to
go in the right direction and turn it on. This failed repeatedly. He also
said to switch the fan off and on quickly, but there is no direct connection
between the switch and fan, so I did try to disconnecting the power to fan a
couple of times. This failed too. The only thing I can think of to do now
is to try this with the hot wire going down the down rod, but I'll probably
want to take off the blades seeing that I'll be doing this up by a 13'
ceiling. Or, I guess I could purchase a replacement wired transmitter and
receiver and hook it up for just a minute so as to allow me to reset the
motor direction.

Any other suggestions?

-----------------------------------

Update: nothing worked. I tried leaving the power off for a while. I tried hooking it up backwards (neutral to line/line to neutral) both before and after the receiver. Swapped in another wireless receiver.

I called the supplier of the fan and got the part numbers for the wired wall controller and receiver, and then called Home Depot for a price because the supplier doesn't do retail.

$149.99!!!!:Q

There is only one wired wall controller on ebay and it isn't the one I need (with a button for summer/winter) and no receivers.

Time to get a new fan.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Home Depot said they'd give me a $50 gift card for my pain.

EDIT #2: SUCCESS!!

I had to spin the fan in the right direction, then turn it on, then had to have the daughter cycle the breaker twice. WOOT

Have you tried powering off the ceiling fan from the Electric panel to see if that resets it.

Another option would be to buy a replacement remote. You will need to access both ceiling fan and remote to set both of them to the same dip switch setting.

this!?!

ive had remote ones with the manual switch still existing

The three I installed for the folks didn't. Easy way to reset it though, just flip the breaker for a few minutes.

Layer 1: Is the fan plugged in? And hey. How did your post just randomly stop half way through the page instead of spanning all the way across?

There's this magical key to the right of your quote key called "enter"

Probably going to require the remote to change the mode if their is no switch on the fan. If its in clockwise mode and that is the default mode, then toggling the breaker isn't going to change that. Probably defaults to summer mode, doubt they put an eeprom or backup power in the fan to store the last used direction information. But if its stuck in winter mode, sounds like some electronics are screwed.

Get the model number and search for manual online.

Profit.

If it is Hampton Bay, your only recourse is to call Home Depot and then conference call with a tech. They don't want you to know that all their stuff is rebranded stuff.

I did this.

Tech said to try turning it off and on quickly or forcing the blades in the direction that you want and turning it on. Both were major fail.

This is the first fan I've seen without a manual switch, but the tech said it is the way they do it sometimes.

Is it an IR remote? Do you have a Harmony (or a friend with a harmony)?

If so Logitech probably has the codes for it.

Hampton Bay, DeLano (sp?)

Because it is discontinued the tech emailed me a pdf of the manual for another similar model.

So you're admitting that ATOT wasn't your first choice of home repair forums??! :frown:

If you don't have a receipt/valid warranty for the fan, just replace the damn thing. That fan sold for $150, new. It was really worth about $50 and now that it's used, the amount of energy to take it down is worth more than it's scrap value. Buy a new fan. Register the warranty. Keep your receipt. Etc. Etc. and more etc.

Problems with your Hampton Bay fan
First and foremost, Hampton Bay ceiling fans have a lifetime warranty. Since they are the house brand of Home Depot, and sold only in Home Depot stores and websites, Home Depot honors the Hampton Bay warranty. So if your fan breaks or fails, often times the easiest solution is to return the fan to Home Depot for a full replacement under warranty.

Won't they replace it under warranty? I had a fan failed ( different manufacturer ) for a bad ballast a few days ago. It was 5 years old and I didn't have a receit but since they didn't make replacement parts anymore they shipped me a new (different model ) one. I had to pay shipping for the return of the old one but maybe Home Depot would do the exchange.

The fan isn't broken. 😕

Seems to me like the logical solution is to disassemble to fan, reinstall upside down... repeat seasonally as required.
