Anyone wanna bet with me that the rib cage/back/armpit/whatever pain/discomfort thing is stress/anxiety related ? It is crazy how the mind can influence the body.

I am another person since my physician prescribed me some stuff to relax and get rid of anxiety.

On Tuesday, I went to the dermatologist. She said she thought it was some kind of rash (I forgot the term she used) but she took a biopsy of it and I will know the results in about 7 to 10 days.

So I have had two physicians who thought it wasn't cancer based on visual inspection. This makes me feel better.

I also did some research on diabetes and it seems like it might be a plausible explanation for what is happening to me. It seems some of my symptoms match. I hope I don't have diabetes but I guess it's better than having cancer.

Next week on Tuesday, I will have a follow-up with the family doctor. I assume that he will talk about the results of the blood work with me. Since I haven't heard from him since the blood work was done I am hoping this means it isn't bad.

If you're that nervous, an easy fix is to go to CVS and buy one of those cheap sugar readers. Should do the trick and give you a reading. Not 100% accurate of course, but close.

Well today I went for a follow-up to my family doctor.

My blood tests came back pretty normal -- except my cholesterol was a little high. It was 208. My good cholesterol was a little above average and so was my bad cholesterol. I forgot the exact numbers.

I think my blood sugar level was 89 or something. Whatever it was, it was normal. I was afraid I was going to be diabetic.

My kidneys, liver, thyroid etc seemed normal according to the tests.

I told him about my left shoulder blade acting up since I last saw him. It bothered me for about a week and then subsided. The first day it bothered me so much I did not sleep well. I have also had slight dizzy feelings since I saw the dermatologist last week. I was hoping these would be gone once I started worrying less.

I also told him I went to the dermatologist and that she thought (based on visual inspection) that it wasn't skin cancer but some kind of rash. I told him that she took a biopsy of it and that I should know the results within 7 to 10 days. He asked me to have the dermatologist to send him a copy of the results.

He thinks most of my symptoms are due to stress and stuff. I hope he is correct. I am now waiting for the biopsy results. If they are okay then I can rest easier.

During the exam, I had to take my shirt off again and he listened to my heart, lungs etc. Pretty much the same thing during my first exam. So, I'm glad I didn't have to get naked or anything.

My next appointment will be in about 6 months.

These are great news man !

Now that you know you're in pretty good health, don't pass on your follow-up in 6 months.

Don't be shy to talk to your physician about your 'discomforts' whatever or wherever they are. Telling him/her what's going on is the starting point of the healing process.

And, then again, don't underestimate the power of the mind on the human body. Fears and anxiety can drive anyone in pain. Talk to your doc about it.

Take care.

The dermatologist never called me back with the results of the biopsy. They said it should be ready in about 7 to 10 days. Was I supposed to call them? After work I kept hoping they would leave the results of the biopsy on my answering machine. The waiting is the hardest part. I just want to find out for sure whether it is skin cancer or not.

They may not leave the results on an answering machine, good or bad news. With the laws in place about patient confidentiality, I'd imagine they'd get in trouble for leaving it somewhere others could hear it. They're not even allowed to talk to spouses about those things.

So yeah, call them back.

Yay! I got the results of the biopsy and everything came out benign. What a relief! I am supposed to have a follow-up with the dermatologists next week to see how the treatment is progressing and stuff.

Great news!

I hope this little scare will spur you to take better care of yourself and visit the doctor more often! :)

Take care,

I am still experiencing some weird symptoms like occasional dizziness/vertigo and sometimes my neck and parts (shoulder) of my left side feel funny. I was hoping these would disappear completely as I stop worrying more and more with each good diagnosis.

I'm hoping that getting better sleep and taking better care of myself will fix it. My worry is that there is something wrong with me but it is something that is hard to diagnose but hopefully it's just caused by overworrying (which is what I think my family doctor thinks it is).

Oh well, I have taken what I feel are reasonable steps (gone to both a family doctor and a dermatologist) and my blood work and biopsy are okay so I will try to stop worrying.

General and Family practice are really interchangable. I would go with someone you feel comfortable with.

I grew up with a mom that was a CCU/ICU and later OB/GYN nurse. I never thought it odd of discussing a medical problem as it seems people suffer all sorts of stuff.

I did have to deal with one prostate exam when I had a kidney infection. It's extremely rare for male to get one. It turned out to be a fluke...

Your best bet is to simply lay all your concerns on the table. The doctor will then evaluate the proper course of treatment.

Being that you have not been to a doc in a long time he will probably do a complete set of blood work and a full physical; possibly a prostate exam, but many don't do this until you are 40.
