I have a broadband router in the basement, and a computer in my room. I have a wire going from desk to desk. My router and computer both register a connection, yet the dhcp on the router doesn't assign an ip address to my desktop upstairs. I have a computer runnong off it and it's working fine. I sometimes get a connection registered on the router but i always haveone on my desktop. It runs fine on the internet because i've had it hooked in in the past. I don't know why it does that. It is a rather long cable.
On one end it's wired:
