i need a workout that...

that will make my muscles feel like they're on fire after i'm done. when i go to the gym, i run about 3 miles then i hit the machines for another 30-45, but i don't get that feeling that i get when i've done, say, a kickboxing class (i was pouring sweat when i was done, but they're too expensive for me to do now). any ideas? or should i just increase the intensity/duration of my workouts? one caveat - it has to be something i can do without the assistance of anyone else (ie, whenever i feel like doing it, not going on someone else's schedule)

Try pilates- sounds all sissy like but I've been hearing that the exercises work wonders (starting tomorrow myself).. Also, try to one rep theory - research shows that one EXTREME set is as effective as a bunch of comfortable reps.. In other words increase your regular weights by say 30-40% and struggle through it ONCE.. That's all you need.. I mean really push yourself until you think your veins will pop..

You know.... I felt the same way. Then I split up my workouts into running days and lifting days. It made a HUGE difference in my workout routine and I saw MUCH MUCH better results. Now when I am done running (which I am leaving in 15min :p), I am dripping with sweat. After working out, I can really feel the blood being pumped ... it is the same intensity, but it works out much better.

Well, I have done cycling, I have done aerobics, I have done weight training, I have done power lifting, I used to play competitive basketball. None of these was as exhausting and repetitive ase a rowing machine.

I used to be on a crew team... I can vouch for that.. sometimes you literally just fall off the machine when you are done.

I have an ipod in a 'fanny pack' and a set of good ear buds. I put in a playlist, put a blindfold on and row until I can't take it anymore ... and fall off the machine on to the floor!

hmm... i've used a rowing machine before. i actually liked it, and felt it was a good workout, but running seems like more to me. do you mean all of the exercises you can do with the rowing machine, or just the normal one?

Have you done full squats to failure? Let me know when you finish puking, when you can walk and maybe when you can drive home. Done properly is a beautiful thing.

When you are at the gym try supersetting/trisets/giant sets/etc ...
