if it were all inside your house.. it wouldnt do much good because it would cancel out.

By "funky", do you mean they slide open from the side rather than top-to-bottom? If so, you can still get A/C units (I have one of these windows, they're called "casement). They're more expensive than regular units though.

Try talking to your landlord. If you're willing to throw a few bucks into the deal he/she might be willing to put a hole in the wall for it. The deal would probably require you to leave the a/c unit behind when you move. At least you'd be comfortable though.
