Saying that the cheaper host is generally "shoddy" is completely uncalled for. If one looks up the reviews for hosting companies such as HostPC or A Small Orange they'll see that the cheap hosts can easily provide support and services that rival the more expensive companies.
absolutely agree here. hostpc is no where near "shoddy." joe goes to great lengths to provide good, cheap hosting.

But I think we all know that the best hosts are the ones not mentioned. No one wants to divulge a great host and have to share their bandwidth....
I'm going to have to disagree with that statement as well. Every reputable host will have more than enough new servers to accommodate new clients, they will not overload existing servers just to get more signups. If anything, it would be good for the satisfied clients to spread the information about their host so that the host is able to expand and stay in business, rather than provide good service to a slowly diminishing client base.[/quote]
again, completely agree. httpme is very well known... and running well. idologic was also very good.. haven't heard much lately, but then again, haven't had much time to look this stuff up.
in the end... you gotta ask yourself what you're hosting... are you running 100% of your business off this site? is this just for a small informational site? or maybe some sort of clan-site (friend of mine was asking about this just last week)?
you mentioned vBulletin... if you have a fairly active forum... then yeah, you might want to look into something like httpme... or talk to whoever you go with and explain your intent.. and if they're reputable, they'll help you out.
