I need a new TV series to watch

Watch The Shield.

This.

That's the only show I've ever watched every episode as they aired (or shortly after once I got a DVR, but I usually watched it "live" anyway.) Funny is that the Sopranos were on at the same time and some friends kept telling me to just watch it once, I figured it's a mob show on HBO, it's gotta be good. The couple odd episodes I watched were absolutely horrible, one Tony was dreaming the whole time and it was all a bunch of odd shit like him riding a horse around the house, and the next one was a fat guido sucking some dude off on a construction site. W T F? The Shield on the other hand was a cop show on regular cable, and they were beating someones ass every episode.

Any suggestions?

Our favorites:
Game of Thrones
Dexter
Boardwalk Empire
Sons of Anarchy
True Blood
Lost
If you have a sci-fi bent, Firefly and Farscape.
If you (and your wife) like soft-core pornography and brutal violence: Spartacus
The best rated series on IMDB is the wire, and yes, it's good, though I wouldn't go as far to say it's the best. Definitely something I would recommend if you are searching for something with a guarenteed entertainability.

British stuff: the IT crowd: funny comedy about the braindead jobs of the IT apartment that is housed in the cellar of the company. Dark and absurd humour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALZZx1xmAzg

Sherlock: A modern take on sherlock holmes, very very clever!

Breaking Bad - AMC original series - It's been mentioned multiple times for a very good reason.
Deadwood
Sopranos
The Wire
Shameless
Hell on Wheels - Another winner from AMC
Walking Dead - Yet another winner from AMC

Your list seems pretty drama centric. Do you and your wife enjoy satire/comedies? If you do, check out Arrested Development. Even if you don't like satirical comedy it might be nice to mix it up and watch something different.

X-Files complete is on Netflix, I think, if you haven't watched it.

It has a 90's feel to it, but it's still a great series. And watch the first X-files movie at the proper time as well (I can't remember after which season that was). It's basically a big, cool big budget episode.

Shameless! I can't recommend this show enough. It's completely over-the-top, but that's part of the appeal.

Breaking Bad is great as well.

Sparticus starts back up this week.

Breaking Bad
Pushing Daisies (not on anymore)
Testees (not on anymore)
Carnivale (not on anymore)
Burn Notice

Has anyone watched Pen and Teller Fool Us? It's pretty crazy and funny as well.

I was also disappointed in Alcatraz...I really was hoping it'd be decent. I normally like Sam Neil's work.

I haven't seen Burn Notice in a while, but I remember that it seemed very "meh" after the first season.

I almost shit my pants when I first heard the nightman song. That being said, the show itself is hit and miss.

I agree. The episode where the gang try to take a road trip to the grand canyon had me cracking up. First they lose the grill when it slides out the back of the Uhaul, so they try to cook by lighting the wicker chairs on fire which knocks them out. Then Charlie gets scared and gets the hitchhiker to give him a ride back to Philly, who steals the car. LOL. Charlie is the best - he makes that show watchable 😀

Breaking Bad for sure! I am in season 2 now.

I have to poo poo the Hung suggestion, I liked it until they cancelled it with no wrap up.

Breaking Bad is great as well.

Breaking Bad is great--just plowed through the first 3 seasons on Netflix, waiting to be able to watch the 4th.

Thing is, I can't point to a character on the show that I actually like.

I think my favorite character was Tuco, but, well.... :\

I don't think you are really supposed to 'like' any of them. For me it's always been more about..how much further down the hole can these people go. Walt gets out of so many things that would never happen IRL..but then that's the point of TV.

To those recommending Supernatural. The first 5 seasons, definitely. The last 2 seasons...wtf..they need to end it. It's just wandering aimlessly. They are ruining it.

We are big fans of The Office and Modern Family and enjoy comedy, but it's not our first choice when looking for a series.

We definitely lean towards more serious shows. I guess you could call it drama, but only if it's drama with a good amount of action, adventure, or mystery.

The Sopranos - We watched the first couple seasons and liked it, but kind of got bored with it at some point.

Person of Interest - Watched the pilot and thought it was decent, but nothing really special. We missed the next couple episodes and haven't gone back to watch them.

The Wire - I can't remember for sure, but I thought we had started watching this and didn't get into it. Everyone tells us it's great, so maybe we'll have to try it again.

X Files - Watched some when it was on TV and never really liked it.

A lot of the other suggestions sound good. I think we'll probably start with Breaking Bad or Homeland since they are available on Netflix and Showtime On Demand.

I did the same thing. Watched a season and a half of it... it just bored me. Sure, it's "real", but it wasn't particularly exciting much of the time.
