I need a GOOD winter coat. Recommend me one.

So this year I want to avoid freezing my butt off due to not having a good enough coat.

I want a QUALITY coat that is going to keep me warm.

Seems like I want a down coat since those are warmest.

I've had a couple people suggest "the north face." I've never heard of these, would they be ok?

Suggestions?
 
North face or Colombia.

Edit: I realize that North Face stuff has become the trendy thing on campus, but AFAIK they really are good coats.
 
TNF stuff used to be better, but it's all made in third-world countries now, so it's lacking in quality. And it still costs a lot.

Go with something from Marmot, Columbia, EMS (if you've got a store in your area, I recommend a visit!), or visit your local hiking/skiing/locally-owned outdoors shop. The people there will likely be able to tell you whatever you want to know about a good coat.

Things I recommend for a snowy, rainy climate: GoreTex lining (water/wind proof), a layering system (fleece + a waterproof shell), and a GOOD HOOD. I can't stress the hood issue enough...I love the hood on my EMS parka. 🙂
 
I used to like North Face, BUT I've been going Banana Republic these days. They keep me pretty warm. North Face... after they started to mass market, it seems that the quality started going down. Own 3 goretex's and found the difference. The one I got in 1998 was so much better than the one I bought 2002.
 
Oooh, I like banana republic, their stuff fits me as i am sort of tall and lanky. I wasn't aware that they made coats of this nature though.
 
do yourself a favor, go with columbia.

I have a parka from them, it literally makes me INVINCIBLE in the winter. it is the warmest jacket I have.

I'm fairly sure that most Helly Hanson (and Burton) jackets are made for snow sports, so they are breathable. They have mesh around the armpits and sometimes at the chest pockets. That's great when you're snowboarding, but it sucks when you are walking to class.

The North Face makes some nice jackets. Just make sure its a "climbing" jacket or a down jacket. The skiing and snowboarding jackets are also breathable.
