So this year I want to avoid freezing my butt off due to not having a good enough coat.

I want a QUALITY coat that is going to keep me warm.

Seems like I want a down coat since those are warmest.

I've had a couple people suggest "the north face." I've never heard of these, would they be ok?

Suggestions?

Depends on Budget. $500 = go to EMS and get a shell and fleece liner. never be cold again!

huh.. what is this "goretex" you speak of...

If wind is more of an issue, be more concerned about getting a shell. How is the ewaeather in Arizona i nthe winter? Is the cold to to wind chill?

north face has some nice stuff, go with something that has gore-tex in it as that stuff keeps you warm.
Gore-tex doesn't keep you warm, it keeps you dry. The fact that it is so breathable means your body heat escapes rather easily. Gore-tex or any of the other waterproof/breathable fabrics is a good choice if you need something that will keep you dry in the rain or snow. The two part coats would be my choice. Gore-tex shell and fleece liner. Columbia makes some nice ones now.

WTF? A coat in Arizona?

I think the sun has fried your brain, my friend.
Apparently you've never been to Flagstaff in the winter or spring.

I once drove from Colorado to Arizona in March in a car with no heater. I arrived in Flagstaff around 11pm. I spent the hour before arriving, driving in the snow with the windows partially down to keep the windshield from fogging up. Even though I was wearing several shirts and a winter coat, I have NEVER EVER been that cold in my entire life.

EDIT: I see the OP is in Tucson. Tucson does get fairly chilly, but I wouldn't call it cold. Since it's so dry there, unless you like to go to Mt Lemon, I wouldn't bother spending the money on a waterproof/brethable shell. Just get a nice polartec jacket.

North Face, Mountain Hardware or Columbia

Some here seem to not like North Face. I tend to disagree with that. You may be able to find a lower priced jacket with the same features, but North Face customer service has always been good to me (as long as it is North Face retail and not seconds. Example: My Tech ski jacked got torn when I slammed through some tree branches at high speed and took the end of a thick branch by my armpit. North Face repaired it at a very reasonable price. Also, zip in liner jackets have had the zipper style change about 3 years ago. North Face took my jacket and installed the new zipper system for free, put it in the queue under warranty (I lost my original zip in liner)---and my jacket is 6 years old.

wait, do you want a nice coat or a dressy coat?

if you want one of those winter coats, you can go with north face, columbia or whatever else everyone is suggesting.

if you want a nice dressy coat, perhaps a pea coat?

Carhartt; If you want a Mans coat.

I have one of these and only wear it when its Really cold out,the wind chill yesterday was -20f,
I had my Carhartt Coat, and hood in my truck, but never put it on,LOL.I just wore my light jacket when I was outside.

Another great winter coat, would be ANY Snowmobile coat,
go to a Polaris/Arctic Cat snowmobile dealer, and see what they have in last years "Colors".

The sled colors change year to year, and the jackets change a little bit,to match the Snowmobiles. 🙂

north face, columbia, or rei. you cant go wrong. my north face is a waterproof shell that zips over a polartec- really warm, but breathable so its not uncomfortably hot indoors.

I'll second the carhartt. Nothing beats a carhart for the price.
I have two. If I'm outdoors in sub-zero weather, with blowing snow, that's the jacket for me. For skiing, I have a Columbia jacket - because the carharts look stupid over my snowpants. (gotta match)
I skiid one night with a 24 below wind chill factor with the Columbia jacket... Never got cold, except a little bit of my face while going into the wind on the chairlift.
Still, I prefer the carhartt for everyday use. (It was just 2 degrees with a well below zero windchill the other day... I was just fine.)

I live in Texas. Even when it does drop below the 40s im still walking around in my shorts and t shirt.

Go to a local Army surplus store and get you a Cold Weather Field Jacket(M-65) and liner. It'll cost them $90, and it will keep you warmer than an arizona summer and last longer than all these poser jackets that are being listed here.

I have had the same Bear jacket for the past 10 years. Very, very, warm. Not one rip or tear in the stiching, like so many others eventually have(down constantly popping out).
