I might have managed. I guess I used some lousy bread or something. The finished product was less than a quarter inch thick and its surface caused syrup to bead up, rather than be absorbed.

Is there a certain kind of bread which is ideal for French toast? I just bought plain white bread.

Thicker is usually better, you can even cut thick slices of french bread. Texas toast also works well.
