$20k for joining? Do you have a a medical degree? Or is some recruiiter making a promise. I know current troops who are reenlisting for far less and they are already trained veterans.

It's an enlistment bonus. I talked to a recruiter today. It's on the website too.

The average is $15k for infantry, so how do you think you qualify for $20? Good luck, regardless.

So what MOS are you looking at?

Go artillery. Gunners have the most fun, by far. Not to mention it's freakin' COOL seeing the aftereffects of your handywork.

Yeah, right... Did the recuriter promise you that? If you enlist now, odds are you'll be doing convoy duty in Iraq.

As long as you have thought it through, good for you. Don't listen to all the negativity in this thread...most of it is from people that never served I'm guessing.

I am trying to reenlist myself at the ripe old age of 40, spoke with them yesterday. Need a waiver or two but still going for it, active duty though. (68W - Healthcare Specialist)

P.S. Didn't even know about the bonus, thats just icing on the cake for me.

How are you getting $20,000?

That link you provided states the $20,000 bonus is available for a select few MOS's; the MOS you are deciding upon is not one of those available MOS's.

Good luck though; you'll definately need it. Hopefully you'll save some of that bonus; funeral expenses are a 6itch!

Nope and I got all my limbs to prove it.

The National Guard shouldn't be used to fight undeclared foriegn wars based on BS Foriegn agendas, it should be used to defend our borders, our country and to help in disasters.

If you want to go abroad, meet exotic people and kill them join the Army or Marines, they can use you, especially the Army who has been failing to meet it's enlistment quota as of late.

um, chief. Army National Guard been fighting wars on foreign soil since the creation of USA. In fact, a whole division of Army National Guard 29th ID landed on the beach of Normandy.

Red Dawn stated what their main purpose is. National Guard units are state governed unless needed on a national/global level. Its happened alot recently because of the huge downsizing of the active Army (referring to use of the national guard in global affairs)

Yep that was a declared war and their actions were defending our country.

"huge downsizing of the active Army"???😕
Correction: active duty military doesn't have the capability to handle two wars(OIF, OEF) all at the same time in the last 5 years.

I can't think of any american's conflict that doesn't involved the Army National Guard.

Clinton effectively reduced the Armed Forces by anywhere from 30-40%.

EDIT: This is not just personnel, but overall, including ships, vehicles, weapons, etc.

depends on your definition of "downsizing". US armed forces is still one of the largest armed forces in the world in term of spending and manpower.

Irrelevant.

And no, it doesn't depend on my definition of downsizing. I'm not saying Clinton was unjustified in reducing it, but when you go from 2 million + active duty to 1.4million active duty, it's downsizing.

The National Guard are technically not part of the "active" United States military.

After the downfall of the Soviet Union and the Cold War era, the Army approved of reducing the active force to 535,000 around 1991; 1994, down to 495,000.

As long as you realize that National Guard = Iraqi Guard, and are okay with that, great!

I considered joining the Marines for a while. Still am, actually.

Said downsizing would not have been a problem if we hadn't suddenly decided to fight two simultaneous wars immediately afterwards.
