My long list of stories from work continues after #1 the guy who threatened my life and tried to vandalize my car and #2 the guy with $50,000 In fake travler's checks

I was in the store helping out with the repairs since I didn't have any appointments to go to. We were doing a virus removal on a computer. I was comming up with ALOT of items, almost all of them from one folder. I decided to take a look at the folder in question and it was a porn folder - a big one. Ones with names like "13yr old" "xxxPRETEENxxx" and the like - a lot of them. So its company policy (I had to look it up) that in situations like this we call the police immediatley and turn the computer over to them without looking at the items in question. Apparently this is becuase if I were to look at them and make the decision "No, she is definately not 18" then the police can use that to get a warrent immediatley - but also opens us up to ALOT of liability issues.

So Police officer Scott came and we had a chat. He couldn't activley look at them due to legal issues either. We talked about how he (the customer) could get the pictures, the fact that they were being activly shared through his p2p program (Limewire no less) and alot of non incident related stuff. He called in Detective Jones (once he knew the claim was legit) and they took the laptop to a judge to see if they could get a warrent to search his computer and - most likely - arrest him.

One way or the other we will know tomorrow what happens and I will be sure to update

UPDATE: So - I learned that cops aren't very good at returning calls. Anyway, yesterday I finally got a call back from the officer. They got the warrant for the arrest, the arrest was made and it sounds like they will be going to trial. Needless to say, we won't see that laptop again.

I guess its time to paint that third silhouette on the side of my computer

Sucks to be him. We actually had a similar discussion earlier today. We deal with a lot of lost flash drives, and a couple of them have had porn on them.

To be fair, he may not have known about it. I've definitely come across a couple trojans that downloaded a few masses of files through P2P that were titled similarly. Can't say if the content matched, because I wasn't about to find out. I just think it's unlikely that someone would be stupid enough to hand over a laptop with that kind of crap.

EDIT: Oh, and it's also unlilely that he'll be convicted of anything. He brought it in complaining of viruses, and that defense will likely stick assuming he gets a decent defense lawyer.

you would be amazed.

about ohh 10 years ago or so. i used to own a small computer shop. i had a reputation a someone who didnt care what was on the drive (as in SOFTWARE. other stores would turn you in). if you had illegal software i didnt care. not my job to check it.

well one guy brought in a computer with a error. think it was the video card or something like that.

Anyway i fix it and flip it on. let it boot up. the background was a picture of a 8 yr old with "toys" etc. there was a few diffrent folders.

i just called in the police and let them handle it.

they told me to give back the computer and they busted him then.

Again, horribly unlikely for someone to be that stupid. I know there are a lot of dumb people in this world, but no one would willingly give up a computer with child porn as the damn wallpaper.

Copying porn is one thing - copying someone's kiddie shit is something else. And it wasn't like it was only a little that someone might have renamed before sharing - there was ALOT named like that - if I had to guess I would say around 150 jpegs and mpegs

waggy - seriously! Hey I have a lot of illegal crap on my computer - let me take it into a place and ask them to do something that scans all my folders and could point out what it is that I am doing illegally. Yup - that sounds like a good idea to me!

That's not what I was saying. I've downloaded software with cracks from P2P which filled my client with that kind of garbage.

I don't know about that. He had a lot of other stuff in there and it was pretty well organized - "Rap Music" "Rock Music" "Horror Movies" "SciFi Movies". I find it hard to believe that he didn't notice this much stuff in what looks like a folder he frequents a lot. -It was in its own folder as well

But I am just speculating. This is the first time I have been involved in something like this so we will have to see how it turns out.

there have been reports of trojens that actually do it. seem to recall one case where the guy got busted for child porn. used this for a defense and won. he was able to prove that the trojen could cause it.

All his lawyer has to do is reference that case and he's off the hook.

Who in their right mind downloads rap? I'd blame that on the trojan, too.

The trojans I've encountered simply download or create jpegs with these names; they don't actually download child pornography.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/securi...000189,39115422,00.htm

man accused of storing child pornography on his computer has been cleared after it emerged that his computer had been infected by a Trojan horse, which was responsible for transferring the images onto his PC.

Julian Green, 45, was taken into custody last October after police with a search warrant raided his house. He then spent a night in a police cell, nine days in Exeter prison and three months in a bail hostel. During this time, his ex-wife won custody of his seven year old daughter and possession of his house.

This is thought to be the second case in the UK where a "Trojan defence" has been used to clear someone of such an accusation. In April, a man from Reading was found not guilty of the crime after experts testified that a Trojan could have been responsible for the presence of 14 child porn images on his PC.

Trojan horses can be used to install a back door on a PC, allowing an attacker to freely access the computer. Using the back door, a malicious user can send pictures or other files to the victim's computer or use the infected machine to access illegal Web sites, while hiding the intruder's identity. Infected machines can be used for storing files without the knowledge of the computer's owner.

Kevin Hogan, senior manager at Symantec Security Response, told ZDNet UK that he has known Trojans to pretend to be a game, picture and even a Windows folder. "It is technically possible for a Trojan to set up someone's computer as a proxy machine. So you see a folder on your desktop, double click it and it executes."

According to Hogan, a Trojan back door can usually be dealt with by using an up-to-date antivirus software or a personal firewall.

Green told The Evening Standard that the experience wrecked his life because he was treated like a depraved sex fiend. "I had never been in trouble before. In cases like this it is not innocent until proved guilty, but the other way around," he said.

I knew i read it someplace. it happened in the UK so it wouldnt be of any help to anyone in the uS.

I've encountered trojans that actually download stuff. I know some of the software was real, but not sure about the videos. The jpegs had thumbnails, so I know those are real.
