<<You should have said that in your first post instead of implying thats its gonna handle like a beat up farm truck>>

True, but what fun would that have been? 😛 As I said it's not a bad car, just not my type of car. I'd prefer an older (4-cyl. Turbo, 300HP) Lotus Esprit, or a Porsche 916. My HS History teacher had an SS (probably still does) and I remember seeing him do a burn-out in the parking lot on more than one occasion. The engine definitely has a nice sound. And to the person who thought it was a Caprice, it is just like a Caprice, except the engine, transmission, suspension, chassis modifications, larger wheels, stickier tires, and all sorts of other performance modifications that Chevy put on it.

<Different car, similar body. >

Unless it wasn't apparent, I was being facetious.

I know the difference btwn a Caprice and an Impala which I still consider a souped a taxi cab.

Stock imports that run the 1/4 faster:
Toyota MR2
Acura RSX
Integra Type-R
Subaru WRX
Eclipse GS-T/GSX
Prelude VTEC
RX-7
3000GT
300ZX
And the Supra (obviously)

The lowest I've ever seen a stock SS run is 15.1 - all of these cars can do better than that

15.1???

Naw man...I've heard of stock SS doing way better than that.
I don;t have the link, but I am looking for it.

I'll concede the other cars, but no way a prelude or a type r is going to beat a ss. Not even rsx I don't think

damn..i've always wanted an impala ss too.. glad someone else here likes em. hard to find one in good condition less than 100k miles on it now..

It's 4200lbs, 260HP, and an auto, to me that equals out to low 15's. I doubt a stock SS can do less, but maybe I'm wrong.

I was thinking that most stock impala ss run closer to 14 and ones with a few bolt ons run in the low 13s and high 12s.....

Well, from my experiences from riding cabs in NYC, I know they can do 0-Redlight at the end of the block in 1 second.

I can't see that happening with only 260HP in a car that weights 4200lbs. A 3100lb Spirit R/T runs 14.5 with 224HP, so that's only 35HP more with 1100LBS more, that's a lot for so little HP.

I bought my 1996 Impala SS brand new in late 1995. This thing HAULS ASS. Rice burners make me piss myself laughing at their giant exhaust tips that sound like some very talented girl ripping queefs on the Howard Stern Show. (No disrespect to Howard is intended; he is the man.) I've had my SS up to 140MPH before I chickened out. It was still pulling strong too; the speedo goes to 160MPH. With 255/50 ZR-17 BFGoodrich G-Force meats and stock sway bars front and back, it handles just fine. I love this car, it's just too bad they needed the factory to meet the demand for SUVs; the profit margin on SUVs is that much higher I guess. The 1997 model was gonna have the same 6-speed manual as the 'Vette and they probably would've dropped the LT-4 under the hood seeing as how the 'Vette, Camaros and Firebirds got 'em.

Oh well. Since I can't get a new Impala SS, I'm setting my sights on a new Cadillac Escalade. Maybe in a few years.

By the way, the ONLY cool Japanese car EVER was the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo. Now that was a wicked-looking car.

<< It puts the smackdown on euro wannabes!!

Whut Biaaaatch!!! >> hahah what a ghetto wagon.

I doubt that stock impala will make 1/4 mile under 15 sec. That thing is huge, thats like drivin lincoln continental. Id pick civic over impala, but thats mostly cuz i dont like the body styling

Correct. The 96 Impalla SS will run the quarter in mid to low 15 seconds. They're extremely heavy.

However, you can tune the LT1 powerplant up with conventional Camero mods. Mmmmmm

They're big, but they haul mega ass!

They aren't that fast if they run the 1/4mi in low 15s. A Maxima 5-spd can do a high 14s STOCK and it can seat 5 people comfortably and probably handle just as good or better than the ImpalaSS. Strap on a S/C on the Maxima and its bye bye Impala. No way the Impala could even compete against the German marques either, an A6 or 540 would eat it for lunch.

That said, I would love to own an Impala SS, mainly because of what it is. Not cause its fast, but cause its damn aggressive! When you see an Impala in person, your in awe. That beautiful body with sublte curves and a menacing front end. If you an Impala SS behind you, you better move! ImpalaSS have a lot of hertiage behind them, they are a classic.

Do NOT compare the maxima to the Imp... you're on dangerous ground there. You can just as easily trick out an Impalla as you can a Maxima (supercharger and the whole bit). Not to mention RWD and a helluva lot more torque and a Maxima.

Believe me, I've seen blown maximas up close and personal, but I've also seen some tricked out Imps. I wouldn't say anything about the Maximas handling capabilities either, the rear beam axel really hurts the cars roadhandling performance.

That said 🙂 I'd love to own a Maxima!

i like the older impalas with the lt1...just drop a 383 in it. ive never driven one...not a big sedan person, but one of my friends talks about them all the time. Too bad the ones now have a sorry a** v6 in them like my camaro. the rumors were that gm was gonna make the new ss with an ls1 in it, but that fell through. the cops were all pissed off cause they were gonna pimp them while chasing down speeders. oh well.
