<<yeah, thats why police drive similar models, because they are so overweight and cant handle corners.>>
The police drive them because they need a full size car. There simply isn't enough storage space in smaller, better handlig cars for them to be as suited for police business as a Caprice or a Crown Vic. While I'll admit that the SS took corners quite well for a car it's size, that does not change the fact the it weighed well over 3,000 lbs. It's an unfortunate law of physics that heavier objects tend not to be as nimble as lighter objects. I'm willing to bet that almost any well driven small sporty car would beat a police cruiser down a twisty road. Of course, that's a moot point because as an officer I know says, "You can't outrun the ol' Motorola.". Police also use these cars because they are built heavily and can take the harsh use that they see, a small, light car would not handle the stress of poilce use nearly as well. Thr SS grew out of the philosophy that you make a car faster by using a more powerful engine, whereas I subscribe to Colin Chapman's philosophy, "For speed, add lightness.", it worked for Lotus.
